once again, to music..[jaws]

It's been a couple of weeks without any excitement, so i guess the powers that be decided it was getting to boring for me!
Once again, i would appreciate some input from the knowledgeable folk on this list.

it's been a really nice leisurely drive from KS back to AZ--warm, good weather...bright sun...wonderful cool evenings. I even decided to stop and see the meteor crater in AZ...awesome!!!!

Got almost into Flagstaff after leaving the meteor crater monument, and cruising along at about 40 mph [I go slow!], and BANG!!!!!! My passenger side inside rear duelly blew!! Scared the living bejesus out of me!! Never HAD a blow out on any vehicle, let alone this monster! Cuz I was going so slow, managed to pull off the road almost immediately.
I have Coachnet emergency road assistance and called them to send out someone to change out the tire--not an easy chore off on the side of the road on the soft shoulder!

Thank goodness it didn't do much damage...and boy could it have! It cracked the adjacent rear storage compartment floor, and bent the heck out of the front wheel well under floor aluminum --it's not a really BAD opening...about 10-12 inches opened up length wise and about two, 3 inches at the widest part--right next to the battery compartment and frig above--both are fine!
......not sure how it's going to be to fix it--that's a later concern!
Pulled out my old spare -the darned thing is over 7 yrs. old!] and limped into town..parked at a gas station while I research where the heck i am going to find replacement tires to fit this rig...we know it's not a real popular size!

What really ticks me off, these tires aren't that old--less than 10,000 miles...always kept properly inflated as per rig weight, rig 'exercised'/driven monthly when parked....I check them pre-trip every day, and heat-check them every stop...they are only about 4 yrs. old...this should NOT have happened!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

Now, I have a dilemma as to what to do exactly...these were all bought at the same time--all 6 tires--  I know you really shouldn't mix new w/old on duellies...so i am confused about how to go about this...to make matters a little more complicated, all my rear tires have value extensions......they are NOT interchangeable. You have to break down the whole tire to install them, so rotating tires isn't really an option.
I'm thinking TWO new tires on the passenger side, and save the 'old' outside tire as my new spare--while the current spare looks and seems OK  @ seven yrs. old--it's been inside the compartment this whole time..never used... I don't feel particularly adventurous after having one tire blow!

But that means that the driver side tires are a fair amt. older...what are the thoughts on this, people?
Going to go google tire shops in Flagstaff...will be checking e-mail off and on for remarks...thanks!!

Gini

Glad you and the rig came through OK.
You probably will not like this suggestion but I would bit the bullet and get 6 new tires and call it good.
You have 4-year old tires that are only a year away from being replaced and one has already blown out.
Duals are always replaced in match pairs and both sides, on the rear, should have tires all the same diameter. The only good way to do this is by replacing all the rear tires.

If you want, move two of the better rear tires to the front.
The downside of this is you are going to be replacing them in just a year and then you will have a mix of older and newer to remember which is which.
The passenger side rear tires usually are the ones to cause problems with the inside tire causing the most problems. It is near the exhaust and is exposed to more heat than the other tires.
BTW, valve extenders can easily be removed and installed on another wheel.

The way Gini described them, I wondering if, rather than *extenders,* they aren't actually the long, metal tire stems like those you'd get from the Tireman?

I don't know if "extenders" are interchangeable or not, but they don't require breaking down the tire in order to install them...long metal tire stems do.

Agree on replacing tires. REMEMBER, that why it may costs a few $$$$, your life is riding on those threads, and whats your life worth? ? ? ? ? To help you save a few $$$ Discount Tire price matches. I had to buy 6 and they did a price match for me. They also have good warrantys and include a lot of free services like rotation, flat repairs etc.
One other place is Sam's Club. They have Michelins and Michelin is doing a $70.00 rebate. I'm the guy who owns the Toyota MH and Michelin does not make my size (185R75 14 - must be used on Toy's) or else I would have Michelins. Have them on ALL my other vehicles. My 2ยข worth.

Gini....I'm convinced that Flagstaff is another STATE. We were moving from Mississippi to Ft Mohave, AZ and wife & I were bringing back our 2 Nissan Maxima's when I was wearing shorts, no shirt, and sandals UNTIL we hit Flagstaff!!!!! The wiper blades would not even move due to the snow!!!! In shorts wiping windows and headlights. It was scary & exciting!!!  Hope you are ok Gini. Welcome (almost) home. 70's today.

Gini, Replacing the tires on the rear passenger side and saving the old one sounds like the way to go. What brand is the tire that blew? Steve

It may not have been age or care that made the tire fail. Perhaps it had been injured by road debris and later failed.
That seems more likely than tires not that old and well taken care of just failing but it does happen. No one here has given that possibility so my .02. :)
