Slab City October 16, 2010, 10:45:45 pm Yahoo Message Number: 117578Just curious, has anybody been to Slab City in Southern Cal, down in the Salton Sea area? If so, is it worth the trip? I'm in southern Arizona so it wouldn't be too far for me to go and the weather would be tolerable this time of year. I know it is strictly boondocking there and from what I've seen on the net there are a few conveniences nearby. Would you consider it safe as I understand a lot of shall we say eccentrics live there more or less permanently. Any first hand experiences would be helpful. ThanksKen 1992 26.5 MB

Be sure to see Leonard's "Salvation Mountain"....you'll be amazed by him and his creation! Slab city is a vey filthy place with trash laying around everywhere. Lots of SS/disability retirees who can't afford to live

Here are a few links to Life on the Open Road from last December for some first hand accounts of a visit to the Slabs. http://lifeontheopenroad.blogspot.com/2009/12/making-art-from-trash.html http://lifeontheopenroad.blogspot.com/2009/12/salvation-mountain.html http://lifeontheopenroad.blogspot.com/2009/12/little-more-on-slabs.html

Re: Slab City Reply #7 – October 20, 2010, 01:22:58 am Yahoo Message Number: 117638We were at the Celebration on Saturday. Some 15,000 to 20,000 people attended. They used 70 of the big double-decker buses from Las Vegas to transport everyone to and from the parking areas. At times, there were buses lined up on about ¾ of the entire bridge. I dont think there will be any problem with any size vehicle. When the bridge opens next week, the dam will be closed to vehicles, so all traffic has to go across the bridge. You will still be able to visit the dam, just cant drive across it any more.It was truly amazing to be up there 890 feet above the river. I thought it would be kind of scary walking around on the bridge, but it was just like any other highway. You didnt think about what was under (or not under) you.Dick

That's one of the main reasons the bridge was built...so that RVs, buses, and 18-wheelers (not to mention automobiles) didn't have to go over the dam. While you will still be able to visit the bridge, I've read where you can only do so from the Nevada side.Linda Hylton http://earl-linda.blogspot.com/
Re: Slab City Reply #9 – November 20, 2010, 02:25:01 pm Yahoo Message Number: 118423We walked on the bridge opening day and yes you can only visit the dam now from the Nevada side. You cannot enter the dam form the AZ side. When you look at the bridge from the dam it looks very scary high but when you drive across it you can't see anyhting but the walls the put up for the wind
