I went to New York last August to take care of my mom, and put my motor home in storage. I paid my registration fees and now I've come back to spend a week in my rv for a vacation. Unfortunatly I did not pass smog. I have spent $500 to have the rv serviced tuned up do a pre-test and another $50 to try and pass smog at a test only station. No I'm at a repair station where It is costing me another $300 to have the tank dropped and find out where the air leak is. Then another $80 to do the smog test at a station that can actually get my Ld on a dyno so it will pass smog..... really makes me want to park my rv loaded with manure in a dmv lot.... Just ruining my vacation. And in the end of August I get to back to taking car of mom who has severe alzheimers..Sorry guys but this is just getting me mad. There is NO God.... My mom speaks to people who are not there..... If thats where everything we know about God came from...it's meaningless.....

I'm also sorry you've had back luck with your Lazy Daze. We RVers all run into them from time to time, and they are never fun. I bought a used LD in Wisconsin once, and was on pins and needles about it passing smog when I brought it back to California. But we ran into another RVer whos Mother has Alzheimer's, and he was very inspiring. She traveled with him in his motor home. This MH had only one door so at all times he was very sure where she was and how she was.I don't know if your circumstances would allow you to do this, Jim, but if you could, even for short times, it might reduce your level of stress and anxiety. And possibly even be a boon to your Mother. So the chance of buying and having something brand new that the wonderful state of ca. will look at being smog compliant is impossible. Its a shame that the state is SO people unfriendly.

I used to drive down into that valley through the thick layer of smog that would depress about anyone--not to mention really do in my elderly parents who ventured out to visit me only once in all the time I lived there. I was born and raised in Idaho-- A place very friendly to people AND SMOG. Boise had temperature inversions and particulate levels that sent the paramedics to my grandparent's house on numerous occasions. I will never forget being a high school kid holding my grandfather's hand while he gasped for air, waiting for the ambulance to come on one of these particularly smoggy nights. I will never forget the fear in his eyes because he couldn't breath. I don't know if any of you have had the experience of not being able to go out of your house because the air quality just won't permit it with your asthma, COPD, or lung cancer. Anyway, maybe the deal isn't to end emission testing and control. Maybe the deal is to figure out how to make these old engines burn things more efficiently. I drive an old LD because I can't afford a new one either. But I didn't complain when I paid over $1200 to overhaul it either so that it would burn cleaning and efficiently. I don't think there is much I can do to change the CA emissions standards, but I wonder if there is more I can do to make my motorhome safer for the environment?Ideas?becky[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I left CA in '99, and have never looked back. It was the best thing I ever did for my well being. I never realized, until I left, how stressful it was to live in Silicone Hell. I still have lots of family in CA and visit on occasion, and get a reminder of what a horrible place it is to live. Oh, I never would have been able to afford an LD if I didn't leave CA. I took a 35% pay cut when I left CA, but I had a much better way of life.May your fortunes soon take a turn for the better.-Victor keep the faith, there is a God.

I would imagine that there are some exemptions if you are a CA resident or even visiting for more than 30 days. The smog would burn your eyes and it was hard to breath. Those days are gone because of the state and federal smog regulations. As an air breather, I'm thrilled to have smog laws that are actively enforced. You may hate California for being ahead of the curve in trying to control air pollution but most of us who plan on continuing to live here are happy to breathe cleaner air. Driving a clean running vehicle is one of the costs of living and breathing here. I feel it's worth it (no matter how screwed up Sacramento is ).Larry

Unfortunatly I did not pass smog. The rest of us have to breathe too! My 1984 passes every time. I'd wonder if a basic tune-up at a non-smog shop wouldn't have been your best starting point. Good time to change the oil, plugs, check whatever ignition parts your year uses, GET IT GOOD AND WARM by burning whatever old gas is in the tank and refill it with new stuff, then see if you pass.

I started by taking my rv to a shop to have a tuneup, replace and bad belts and check all fluid.. That was $300 roughly. they also did a pretest telling me is was ok to go but that the evap, oritive emissions failed..... Then I took it to a test only station who did not do the required test on a dyno.... seems while the Law says that vehicals under 10,000 lbs must be smogged on a dyno. The majority of test only shops have an option to say the rv does not fit and do a static test. So the test that was done as a pre test was a wast of $70 buck of apples to oranges. Then I went back to DMV whom told me they can not give me more than a 1 day use pass. and each time I wish to move it I have to some how go to dmv first with out the rv.. uhm how would that work..... So again my vacation is dead.... I'm 1 step away from an overdose on everything I'm taking now.....and remember when I go back to new york I get to care for my MOM whom no longer communicates with people(me) on this plane of existance. So I went to another shop and spent $225 to have the tank droped lines repaired and the leak in the evap emmis repaird... Sppent an hour driving around trying to find a shop that actually can do a real test only smog check. They can test AND repair at the same site. They didn't put it on the dyno because it wouldn't fit. It passed, and if it hadn't they could have fixed what ailed it until it did pass. My pick-up wouldn't pass, but they would only give me the single day permit as well, said they couldn't give me one for a month like they used to, though I see them on other cars all over town. Your big problem is not with the DMV or the RV . . . that's only time and money. Your real problem is your mother. That's a ten percent reduction in pay for them, and all those people who would have gone in on those two days are still going in, just on the other days they're still open. That's a ten percent pay cut and a ten percent higher workload on the days they do work. And DMV was crowded before. Don't blame the indians because the Chief can't get his act together.
