I saw this hand vac featured in MotorHome mag and bought one.  Been looking for something non-battery powered that was small and powerful for small area cleaning and dog hair.  The battery powered ones I've experienced never seem to be powerful enough. I just tried it out in the LD and it seems to work quite well.  It can easily be used with a small inverter when dry camping.

Chris, I'm wondering... that unit is rated at 4 amps at 120V, meaning 40 amps at 12VDC. Most small inverters top out at about 400W, and 40A is three to four times what can be drawn from a typical 12V outlet. I assume you've tried this... what was your setup?

No, not tested yet.  I wrote the post before checking amps which I learned, also, were 4 which is too heavy a load for the usual 400w inverter that many of us carry. I didn't expect it to be so high.  So, it's shore power or generator unless one has a hardwired heavier duty inverter.  In any event, a small unit with lots of sucking power is what I was looking for, so using the genset is not a problem for me.

Hey Chris,

Have you actually used this vac in tight corners for dog hair?  I am in the market for a hand vac and mainly need it for dog hair/dirt.  But I need to get behind crates and such so would probably need one with an attached hose too.  Just wondering how powerful yours is.  I  looked at a Dyson Hand Held several weeks ago and was wondering about that too as it doesn't weigh much.
Has anyone used the small Dyson?

Judy, if you look at this Amazon link, there are a handful of photos of the Bissel hand vac, some which show the hose and pointy attachment.  I have only tried each attachment once in the LD and to me it did an excellent job (for its size) in getting into cracks and crevices with the pointy attachment.  For its compact size, the motor seems quite powerful.  http://www.amazon.com/Bissell-47R5-Auto-Mate-Handheld-Cleaner/dp/B002KCMH7K>

Here's another possibility. This Eureka 71B is the vacuum I use:

http://tinyurl.com/y4d5bjq>
Like the Bissell, it requires more 120VAC than most inverters can deliver. But unlike the Bissell, it has a revolving brush that makes a big difference in getting pet hair out of carpeting. Also unlike the Bissell, the Eureka's hose, crevice tool, and power cord all store *on or in* the vacuum. It's a clever design with no extra pieces or dangling bits. I've tried three or four small vacuums over the years, and this is the best I've found to date.
Now with all that said, I do most of my cleaning with my Swivel Sweeper (http://tinyurl.com/yexhv97>). It does such a good job of picking up pet hair, cat litter, sand, small stones, and dust--both on bare floors and carpeting--that I only need to resort to the vacuum every month or two, and then only to clean the nooks and crannies that the Swivel Sweeper can't get into.
And unlike the vacuum, the Swivel Sweeper *doesn't* require 120VAC, except to charge its battery every couple of weeks (and the charger uses only 6 watts, so even the smallest inverter can handle it). The new red "Swivel Sweeper G2" model has longer-lasting batteries, an easy-to-empty dust pan, and some other nice improvements.
All in all, if I had to recommend just one device for cleaning floors, it'd be the Swivel Sweeper. It's lightweight, highly maneuverable, needs no 120V power, and stores in next to no space, thanks to its fold-flat design. Use it daily, and you'll find you very rarely need a vacuum. :-)
