Suggestions for Stay along Nevada Hwy 95
Yahoo Message Number: 110792
We are going to pick up our 2009 FD on March 16th.  Because we are residents of Nevada, we will be using the ICC driver option and taking possession in Las Vegas.  We are all set for a night stay in Vegas but need suggestions for a mid-point stop between Vegas and Reno, NV.  Read some of the reviews of the two places in Tonopah, but were not thrilled with them.  Beatty is a little too close to Vegas to make it a mid-point.  Anymore ideas?  We are not opposed to dry camping although  we are a little leary of it due to the temps (below freezing)encountered this time of year.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cindy

Cindy:  I am curious why you are using the ICC driver.  When we bought our 04 MB, it was cheaper to pay the California sales tax and the move permit, then get the credit for the CA tax when you register

Sorry: I just realized you are probably just going to transit thru northern Nevada.  Jack

Thanks captjack for your suggestion. We will try that if the casino is cool with it.
We are going to pay sales tax at a rate of 7.475% as compared with 9% tax in CA. The difference is much more than the cost of the ICC driver and the notary fee.

We are located in Carson City.

About 10 miles west of Tonopah on US-6/95 is Miller's Rest Stop.  This is a small rest stop that doesn't allow commercial rigs inside, but they do have a nice large area at the western end just for RVs to overnight.  An 18 hour stay is allowed.  It's far enough away from the road that road noise isn't a problem, particularly at night.  There are flush toilets plus fresh water and a dump, although the dump has been closed the last couple of times we've been there...don't know if it's a permanent closure, or if we've just hit it in the spring before they've opened it up, and in the fall after they've closed it.
We usually stay here twice a year...once on our way north and again on our way back south, unless we take US-93 on the other side of the state.

Hi Cindy, We've stayed at the Tonopah Station Casino.  Best I can say is it's quiet and off the road.  Beyond Tonopah, Mina has an RV park though it's right on the highway.  Hawthorne has the nicest park on that hwy - Whiskey Flats.   But, you're only about 90 mi from home.  Once north of Beatty there isn't much out there.

Thanks Linda and Juli,
I appreciate the ideas. I believe I am familiar with the Millers Rest Stop and will check it out. Staying behind a casino has its advantages and disadvantages too. You are right Juli, not much out there on 95 except beautiful scenery and wide open space north of Beatty.

True that Hawthorne would probably be too close to home for an overnight stop; however, there are three great places to dry camp along the western shores of Walker Lake north of Hawthorne, all BLM areas.
The one closest to Hawthorne, Sportsmans Beach, is a fee campground which is $6 or $4 for primitive areas (half price with Senior Pass/Golden Age Passport or Access Pass/Golden Access Passport holders).
The next two, as you continue north on US-95 are free:  Tamarack Beach and 20 Mile Beach.  Tamarack Beach has designated sites; 20 Mile Beach has undesignated sites.  We always stay at 20 Mile Beach going north in the spring and coming south in the fall if we travel US-95.
Even if you don't stay at the fee campground, Sportsmans Beach, it's worth a drive-through.  There is an upper level campground and a lower level campground.  All along the road from the upper level to the lower level are signs showing the lake level at different periods of time.  At one time, (late 1800's, early 1900's...don't remember now the exact dates), the upper level campground would have been the only one that would have been available since the lake level was that high.  The size of the lake continues to dwindle because so much of the Walker River upstream of the lake is used, plus the Walker River Indian Reservation has dammed the river.

Cindy,

Congrats! You're picking up my second favorite model.
Be sure to adjust the tire pressure before you leave the LD lot. They have the tires pumped up to the max and as soon as you hit the awful CA roads you'll wonder if you've made a mistake buying this rig. Kind of hard to do unless you've had LD install the valve extenders but a must if you want to enjoy your LD on its initial outing. Maybe some on here with recent 24' models can give you some guidance on likely weight as you leave the factory and good tire pressure settings to use. Nevada roads, of course, are smooth as silk.

We usually refuel at the Giggle Springs stations in downtown Tonopah.

I second this recommendation.  We ALWAYS stop here for fuel...the prices for fuel at Giggle Springs are usually a good $.10 per gallon less than the two stations at either end of town.  As you are heading north through Tonopah, Giggle Springs will be on your right just about the middle of town.
There is a nice grocery store in Tonopah, Scolari's, and propane can be had at the Texaco station at the south end of town.

Or Hwy 361 from Luning to Hwy 50 with a side trip to Berlin Icthyosaur State Park. A mile or two of gravel road at the end but an interesting combination of an old mine and a dinosaur dig.

It'll probably be pretty cold up there at this time of year since the park is at about 7,000' in elevation.  The building over the Ichthyosaur dig doesn't open until the end of May, but you can look through the windows.
However, the ghost town of Berlin is very interesting to walk through.

Ichthyosaurs weren't dinosaurs, although they lived at the same time as dinosaurs and were reptiles.

Thanks Terry and Linda,
Lots of good ideas. We were so focused on getting the rig home that we were not seeing the big picture. What's the rush? Especially if the weather turns bad. Its great to realize that we have a lot of options, most of which we are mildly familiar with. Thanks neighbors. Between Carson, Reno, Minden and Gardnerville, we've got quite a nice group up here. Thanks again. You all have allayed several concerns.

To me the tax savings was irrelevant. I *wanted* my sales tax dollars to go to the state where I reside, not California. Having moved from CA, and still having a business and rental property there, I give them a large amount of money every year - - and they're still

You're welcome. The Great State of California doubtless knows how to spend that money better than I.
But you should be careful what you wish, lest you be hoisted by your own petard. Unfortunately, many of those bailing are the wealthy. Or if not wealthy, then at least "well off". They are typically people who make few demands for service on the system, so cost the state little. In return, they pay an inordinately large share of state taxes.  So be selective in shoeing people out, lest they take much of the wealth with them. I saw a TV news commentary on this issue as it relates to CA some time back. The top 5% or income earners pay 70% of all taxes monies collected in the US.

Sorry for helping hijack this thread. We now return you to your regular scheduled programming.

Oh, I hear you. Plenty of the folks who made their fortunes here in California can't wait to move to a low tax state and then turn around and bad mouth the state where their money comes or came from.
If you do not like California, fine, but it would be service and a benefit, to us who still enjoy living here and intend on staying, for non-resident to lay off California up and spend their energy on improving their own states and the nation as a whole.
As an alternative, we could pick a new state every week and have a roast for it, Nah, that would be too political!

And they would have a perfect right to do that - - and without guilt, this being America, we still have the freedom to live and work where we wish (until they decide we can't - I guess). BTW, I thought I'd retire in CA, Had 20 beautiful acres (small ranch) between Napa and Fairfield. Just perfect until I got to the end of the 1 mile private road and tried to get out on Hwy 12. If it was bumper to bumper, they'd let you in - - moving at 15 or 20, you could wait 10 minutes for a gap. I moved to NV for the soaring, butI enjoy the lack of crowds and all the seasons - - even snow!! Woohoo!

Camping overnight somewhere in Nevada. The whole sky opens to a spectacular display that are primitive forebears enjoyed without light pollution. Not a soul for miles and miles with the only sound the song of the wind and coyotes.
