Recommendations near Kennedy Space Center?

Research turns up a few places near there: Great Outdoors & a couple others. Anybody have a special place they'd care to recommend? We'll be there two nights & doing the Space Center tour(s).

Hmmm. Send this campground idea before i sent the one about Manatee Hammock but it never showed up. Strange.
At any rate, Jetty Park is a winner. About 30 minutes south of the KSC Visitor Center. Lots to do right around the campground.

I've got two problems (only two?) that I'm going to need to work around.

1) We're still debating whether or not to pull the toad on this trip. This is going to be a big loop of the country from LA to FL to VT/NY & back home probably northerly & down the coast. The reality is we'd really only *need* the toad

Hi David,

I full time and don't tow.  My solution has always been Enterprise.
They pick you up and take you back and sometimes have weekend, AAA or AARP specials, depending on the franchise location.  Before settling in at a specific campground or area, I use Google Maps to find the nearest Enterprise franchise and then call them to confirm my CG is within their pickup area.

Also, you might find that traveling in the shorter LD might open up parking-in-town  possibilities for you.  Isn't that one of the advantages some of you point out for buying the shorter versions?!!!

Hello David; We don't tow either and travel with a dog.
If I was going to KSC, I'd simply drive the LD. Lots of free parking.  Now & then go back to the camper and walk the dogs. We leave our dog in the camper all the time. Lots of water, open all the vents & crack the windows in the cab and she's just fine. I also have a 4" x 6" card with my cell phone number written on it. I lay it on the dashboard just in case.

Or, they have a free kennel at KSC.

From the KSC FAQ's

"Are pets allowed at the Visitor Complex?
Free kennel service is provided for pet owners. The newly renovated kennels include air conditioning. The kennels are locked and must be opened by a Visitor Complex crewmember. Service animals are permitted throughout all exhibits, presentations and on the bus tour."

Enjoy your trip.

David, (and others headed to FL with dogs), just a reminder to take your dogs' rabies vaccination certificates. Last time we were there (2 years ago), FL campgrounds required the certificates and made copies of them.  They said it was state law.  Campgrounds in NH did the same.  Perhaps someone who has more recent experience can verify this.

David,

May I respectfully point out that you may want to re-think your plan to leave the dogs alone in the RV at the campground while you do the KSC tour.   Most campgrounds will at least say that pets are not to be left alone in RV's in the CG.  Although they probably won't seriously enforce it, you might give some consideration to your neighbors.   At our present location, someone has repeatedly left two small dogs alone in the rig for several hours at a time.  Every time someone walks by, the dogs bark like crazy.  Fortunately we're not too near them.

2) The two dogs will have to remain in the RV while we're doing the KSC
thing half of one day & part of the other. So we'll need to be in a place that I would be comfortable going off with them remaining behind in the RV.
Do you think there's enough security there in that county park?
I notice there's also a KOA in the area. Not my ideal, but it might provide more security for the dogs while we're off touring the universe.

Any more thoughts (anyone) on all this?

Some of the LDSC group, including myself, love Canaveral Jetty Park, Cape Canaveral, Florida, especially the 300 numbered sites dry camping on the ship channel .  Facing Kennedy to the north, ocean to the east w/long fishing pier, Cocoa Beach to the south and the intercostal water to the west.  Love seeing submarines, freighter, cruise & casino ships , coast guard plus all the fishing vessels cruise right past our rigs...full hookups, laundry, showers, ect inside fence of Jetty Park. Passport America prices till Jan 1st..sorry but prices range around $35-$45 for full hookups/$247 week This is our favorite place to see delta rocket and shuttle launches but  not a quick drive to Kennedy Space Center.
Brevard County Manatee Hammock RV Park has the best view of launches from their waterfront.  Spaces crowded but always request a spot as near the water as possible.  'bout $25
Spending a lot of time in Florida, we love the county parks and state parks. Most fun, most birds & aimals and best prices. Just do an internet search for Brevard County parks with camping.  Orange County parks are great around Orland especially Moss Lake Park $26 approx compared with Camp Wilderness approx $80 nite.
Simmons County Park $75 wk near Ruskin & E. Medard County Park $15near plant city are great for fishing, biking, star gazing, ect.. prices from last winter.

Just our two bits..Suni & Tony check the KSC shuttle website for launch schedule parks fill up quick for launch dates.....course all launches may be delayed due to weather.

Can you confirm this?: I had heard that in Florida, most of the county parks forbid pets. Have you encountered this?
Hello David: I'm not aware of any county RV parks that prohibit pets except for one near Orlando. Can't recall the name. For years, Jetty Park would not allow pets but they do now.  For years some state parks, like those in the Keys, prohibited pets but that rule was also eliminated.
As always, a phone call or a read of the rules on the park website would be prudent.
Enjoy your time in FL.

David,
May I ask what timeframe you're looking at?  The reason I ask is that many northeast (NY/VT) campgrounds may not be open until late April ans some not even until Memorial Day.  Do make sure the one(s) you want to stay at will be open if you're looking at dates early

I don't know the size of the dogs in question but Jetty park only allows very small dogs period. I have a daughter in the area and that swhy I can never stay at Jetty park, my dog though not very big is about three times what they allowed at Jetty park. That whole part of Florida is pretty anti dog..

We'll be heading up the Hudson on May 15th. I'll be sure to check availability. Thanks, Michelle, for the reminder.
We travel with dogs and use Easy Rider pet seat belts while in motion, and collapsible >crates when not.  The seat belts are wide web harnesses with a loop/strap on the back >that the "people seat belt" passes through.  There are other brands as well.  These work >well for us.
Hmmm. So you keep them sitting up in a car seat? I seem to recall that when the issue came up about keeping dogs safe in case of an accident (or rollover) and getting them out quickly after... that people were recommending keeping them in something like a plastic air travel pet carrier that was cinched to the floor. Or perhaps I misunderstood. I understood the reason for not using metal wire crates because of the puncture possibility in an accident, but I don't get how to securely tie the carriers down.

They are belted in, but are able to lie down.  With 3 dogs, there isn't enough room for 3 fixed-sided crates (during travel OR stored away).

David,

Another possibility, if you decide to drive the LD to the Space Center, is to spend the night at the Titusville Wal-Mart.  We did that a couple of years ago when we were there for a shuttle launch.  There were probably a couple dozen RV's there..including a pretty old LD.

Sounds like a great trip - we did something similar a couple of years ago and had a blast!  When you get to New England, get in touch with me.  Perhaps we can meet up somewhere for a night or two.

Cheers,

Ted H.

David, I don't remember which model LD you have, but in our 30'LD, we removed the chair behind the driver's seat. We used that space for our two Yorkies' airline-type plastic folding crate. It was big enough for the two of them. It was secured to the floor with the seat belt intended for the chair.
When we travel with them in the car, we use the "VestHarness" pet seat belt harnesses, similar to those Michelle described. The dogs are secured by a strap run through the seat belts or a strap that attaches directly to the child harness teather in newer cars. They can stand up and lay down on the seat, but they can't jump around or be thrown through a window in case of an accident.  The harnesses release with a simple snap. The harnesses can stay on the dog, if you want, and you can hook their leashes to the harnesses. Here's what they look like:

Works for us. Friends who travel with three large dogs in a larger RV use the harnesses to attach the dogs to the seat belts on their sofa.

I like the looks of that RC 3-in-1 harness, and I'm heading over to a shop listed as one of their distributors to pick up two of them. That will work when they're
