Garmin nuvi question, map updates, android
Yahoo Message Number: 110401
I think that before I buy another Garmin update, I am going to go with the new Droid with Verizon. It has google mail, calendar, maps, etc and a voice GPS and a lot of other options. My cousin has it and I was amazed! She even aimed it around in a circle and it showed me the constellations! Cool! It looks up and gives directions to any place you want or gives you the phone number so you can call and check or make an appointment, reservation, or order. It holds music and you can take and store videos and if you point the camera at a bar code, it will tell you were it came from and where you can get another one. Amazing!

Does the GPS on these phones work off cell towers or satellites?  If the former, it wouldn't be of much use in areas where there is no cell phone signal.
Does using the GPS use up minutes from your cell phone?  Is there an extra monthly charge for using the GPS service?

The GPS would work off the Verizon towers so that is a drawback. Maybe save the Garmin for back country use. It isn't often that we run out of Verizon cell service but it sure does happen.
They say that the GPS on the Droid uses a lot of power so the batteries run down faster while using. But that part can be turned off when you don't need it.
There is no extra charge for using the GPS service because (I think that) it's using a new Beta version of Google's maps. I use Google a lot so to me that's a good thing.
At least this is what I am seeing when I read reviews about it. The Droid is pretty new and they are going to have improvements and more aps as time goes by.

"I think that before I buy another Garmin update, I am going to go with the new Droid with Verizon."
Denise, if you really want to go with an Android phone, I suggest considering Google's Nexus 1 rather than Motorola's Droid. The Droid phone has three strikes against it: it's older, it's a lot slower, and worst of all, it cannot be upgraded to the latest version of Android (v2.1). By all accounts, the Nexus 1 is the best of the current crop of Android phones.
Unfortunately, the Android market is in a state of more or less chronic confusion. Many older phones like the Droid are stuck with obsolete software versions and will never be updated. Even new phones aren't immune; Motorola's forthcoming Android model will NOT be equipped with the latest version of the Android OS, even though that version has been shipping on the Nexus 1 for months!
Features and even screen sizes vary widely from one Android model to the next, making software compatibility a dicey matter. (For example, of all Android-based phones, only Nexus 1 has a multitouch screen, and that only became available with a patch issued a month ago.) Because of these "market fragmentation" issues. The Android application store may have thousands of apps, but many of them won't run on many Android phones.
By contrast, iPhones are standardized. Nearly all 140,000 available apps run on all iPhone models, including the very first iPhone ones from years ago, and most of them work just fine on iPod Touch models. If you download it, it will almost certainly work, no matter what you have.
Oh, dear. We keep getting off onto this "app phone" track, which is undoubtedly boring many members of the group to death. ;-) And it's all my fault, because I started it. I'd hate to have to start a separate "App phones for RVers" group, but we probably should wind down this discussion before the majority of members lose patience, hold an impeachment hearing, and throw me out on my ear. ;-)

I've never found it particularly difficult to read the threads which interest me and skip others. ;-)

As ever, YMMV.

Internet access & cell phones are very relevant topics, especially to people like me who still live in the Technology Dark Ages.
I'm looking at a new VZ phone and was thinking of the Droid. I'll rethink my choice.

ed Appreciating the good info.

Andy, I appreciate your input into such subjects as computers and cell phones as they are an integral part of our RV life. Technology is moving so rapidly that my grandkids have a better grasp of it than we do despite our advanced degrees.

Keep up the good work!

Just a quick note for bargain hunters: the Apple Store is currently offering refurbished second-generation iPods Touch (the same model I have) for $149 with free shipping:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod/ipod_touch?afid=p201%7C552179&cid=AOS-US-AFFC>
Other models are correspondingly inexpensive. For example, the third-generation 8GB iPod Touch is $169. These prices are $15-$30 lower than street prices for new iPods Touch. All refurbs carry a the same one-year warranty as new iPods.

They have a 16GB 2nd generation refurbished iPod Touch on sale for $199, which is what an 8GB new generation iPod Touch costs.  Is there any downside to 2nd generation compared to current generation?

Actually, a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch only costs $183.99 from Amazon:

"Is there any downside to 2nd generation compared to current generation?"

It depends on the GB rating. Here's the way I understand it:
All second-generation iPods Touch have the same processor; the only difference is the amount of memory. And the 8GB third generation model is the same as the 8GB second generation model, so it also has the same processor.
However, the 32GB and 64GB *third* generation models have processors that are 50%-100% faster than any of the second generation models.
Now with all that said, my 8GB 2nd-gen model doesn't feel sluggish. So if you buy a second-generation iPod Touch (of any size) I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with it. But in the larger sizes, the third-generation models are faster.

I just discovered this site that says they have a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch for $49.99, http://us.luciddeals.com/apple-ipod-touch-8-gb.

What's the catch?

Well, I found the answer!

Under "Terms and Conditions," it says:

"3. Checkout Process The checkout process consists for four actions required by the user the receive their product. The user must complete one advertiser offer from each of the 3 offer pages. The user must then refer 5 of their friends to do the same. Lastly, user must confirm their shipping address and make final payment for the price listed in red on our website."

Think I'll pass!
