Question:  If Terri and Mike Church were members of this list, would mention of any of their books be verboten?

It certainly wouldn't be a problem for somebody else to say "Hey, I read the Churches' book  and it was pretty good," or words to that effect. But the situation would be different if the Churches themselves were to post "Hey, there's lots of good info in our book 'Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping.' " That's self-promotion, and we discourage it here.
Ted felt that my message pointing out the availability of the bread recipe in, er, A Certain Product That Shall Remain Nameless crossed that line. I think my defense was a reasonable one, but it's certainly a borderline case that one can argue over.
And perhaps that was Ted's (and Paul's) underlying point: as moderator of this group, I shouldn't be involved in borderline cases. I need to set a clear-cut example of good behavior myself, if I want other members to follow the rules. Consider me suitably chastised.

Sure, if the Church's mentioned their books.

But the classical workaround is to include hints in your sig, for example for Andy:

This has been acceptable from the Internet's beginning in my experience.

Hi Judie,

My feeble brain tells me "mentioning" a product or service shouldn't be (and hasn't been) verboten if someone else is the "mentioner"! What I personally feel is unacceptable is for a commercial enterprise *itself* to promote on our forum whatever product or service it's selling, whether or not they are "members."  Others are certain to have differing opinions -- that's just mine!  And I think that establishing a place in our "files" section for self promotion of products/services was a great idea.

Agreed, and we've always allowed it here. Now, if one's signature is six or eight lines of self-promotion, that might be pushing it a bit... but hey, who's counting? ;-)

I think we all agree on the above.  Let's drop this topic before the mouse is milked dry.
