Personal Safety Issues... again
Yahoo Message Number: 108480
Last month, this topic drew a number of responses and opinions, but while having in hand pistols, shot guns, various sprays (pepper, oven, bear), clubs, & tire thumpers were mentioned as possible deterrents, there was no mention made of Tasers. I'd be interested in hearing some opinions on this. And, no, the discussion needn't get "political" or even "ethical." I'd just like to hear if anyone has begun to carry one for personal protection, what its effectiveness is considered to be in RVing "situations," and I'd especially like to hear the views regarding effectiveness from those here with backgrounds in law enforcement. But all are welcome to put forth knowledge based on experience about this. Thanks.
(I'm still working my way through Bo Hardy's excellent book, "Defensive Living.")

Like firearms, Tasers are not necessarily legal in all states, cities and counties. They have been known to lead to the death of the victim.

--- I acknowledge that I have no interest in or experience with carrying and/or using a taser and therefore can't comment on the weapon's "effectiveness". But here are three websites (among several) which appear to offer credible *legal* information:
 http://www.defenseproducts101.com/statestatutesummary_page2.html

http://www.squidoo.com/tasers
 http://www.bodysecurity.com/air-taser-laws.htm

As Larry said, the laws on taser use are not consistent from state to state or even from locality to locality, and since one doesn't know when or where a "taser moment" might arise, it seems to me that it would be smart to be aware of all the ramifications and potential consequences of the weapon's use.
As for a judgment on a taser's use and "effectiveness", you might want to visit a reputable gun shop which offers taser instruction or your local police department and discuss taser use with those who have experience with this weapon in real life situations and can offer face-to-face "counsel and caveats". One has no way of verifying the accuracy or reliability of "testimonials" or credentials offered on *any* subject on the web; IMO, it pays off in the long run to solicit advice from knowledgeable professionals. YMMV.
