LD MB barrel chairs and one twin bed as a double
Yahoo Message Number: 106131
Hi,
Barrel Chairs:  I see LD owners wanting to replace their barrel chairs.  Why?  Are they uncomfortable?
Is one twin bed wide enough to use as a double bed?  How wide is one twin bed ?

Thanks!

Michael

The barrel chairs seem to be a love them or hate them affair.
Both of our LDs have had them and we find them to be comfortable.
Two friendly, non-super sized adults can sleep in a single, pulled out couch. LD's spec sheet shows a single sofa to expand to 50", 4" less that a standard full size bed. It makes a great bed for a single person.
My wife and I sleep in the cab-over bed and wish it were a few more inches wider than the 57". Once again, YMMV
You need to actually try the chair and bed arrangements before making up your mind.

--- Definitely follow this advice before choosing a floor plan; what fits one does not fit all! Before I ordered my (2003) TK, I was set on the "Rear Lounge" version of the 23.5'; 30 seconds of wedging my lower half into one of those narrow, short-seated "lounge" chairs (personally, I think the things would work great in an interrogation room!), I went for the TK. YMMV.
Same for the bed; try all the options in all the configurations! I regularly sleep in the overcab bunk mainly because I can leave it made up and have my bed out of the way. For one person or two small-to-average sized people who like each other a lot, sleeping in the overcab can work OK.
Three additional caveats about sleeping in the overcab bed: first, there's not much clearance in the overhead bed to begin with, and even less when one adds a 3" memory foam mattress; the space is very confining and claustrophobic for some people.  Sitting up in bed, even part way, is not an option; after a couple of "skull knocks", most people adapt to this limitation pretty quickly. Second, getting in and out of the overcab bed in any of the model configurations requires going up and down the ladder; if one or both of the overcab sleepers need(s) to make frequent (or even infrequent, for that matter) trips to the toilet, climbing in and out, up and down, often over the other person, gets old real fast! Third, the ladder, especially the rungs, is apparently designed by the same guy who came up with the chairs; the ladder is narrow and the rung steps are shallow and overlaid with hard (!) rubber. The hard rubber-covered rungs are killers on bare feet, so I wrapped the rungs with closed cell foam secured with tie wraps.  Again, YMMV.
I've also slept from time to time on one or the other of the couches (one is too short for me, and the other is only a few inches longer), usually not "pulled out", i.e., with just the back cushion removed. I used a 2" memory foam mattress topper on the couch(es), not only for additional "padding", but to avoid the bedclothes sinking into the "tufting" of the couch seats. Sleeping in the "down bed" has the obvious advantages of not having to climb up and down the ladder, being able to sit up, and easier access to the bathroom, but one does have to go through the couch-to-bed set-up and take-down process every night and morning.  This would get old real fast for me, but, YMMV!
Just my "musings" and experiences; everyone has different levels of "comfort and convenience tolerance".  The important thing is to be aware of the possible "problems" and try out the various configurations to see what works for *you*.

We are two above-average sized folks (I'm 250lbs, Kathleen is somewhere between, er, ah, em, she's over 100lbs :o) and find the amount of space fine.

Haven't needed a memory foam mattress.
I'm a bit claustrophobic and find sleeping on the open side fine. But not on the closed side.

We got rid of the Inquisition-designed ladder even though its steps were padded by the previous owner. We use a three step folding kitchen step Kathleen also uses to reach some storage areas. That plus the overhead hand hold makes egress safe.
I'm the one whose bladder makes early morning calls, so climbing over is not much of an issue.
Even when Kathleen rarely crawls over I find ***!!!%%% censor deletion %%%!!!!**** fun....

best, paul
