Ed (and I believe Carol?)

We've spent most of the last several months in the Abiquiu area, mostly at Ghost Ranch.  Cel phone (and verizon air card) is spotty at best.  We did get very limited cel reception at the dump at Heron, but didn't actually camp there, so I think it would be site specific.  We visited El Vado, but didn't check the reception.  You can get reception at various places along 84 (We were always good in right outside Ghost Ranch and in Tierra Amarilla).

While you're in the area, you might also want to check out Echo Amphitheater, dry but a beautiful spot.  Also Abiquiu Dam, a COE park.
Sometime this week, we'll be back at Ghost Ranch if you want to stop in and say Howdy. There's a campground (we're the Hosts), kind of expensive (and no pets) but very close to Abiquiu Dam, so if you're in the area, let us know.  While at Ghost Ranch, we have no cel reception, but we do have email.

Earlier this summer, using the same setup as yours, I found no cell phone reception at El Vado Lake SP, and weak reception at Heron Lake. I had to drive into Tierra Amarilla (where there are minimal supplies available) or Chama (where there's a laundromat and a decent supermarket) to make phone calls. I was dependent on my HughesNet satellite dish for internet connections while at these two parks. There is a free Wi-Fi internet connection at the tourist info center in Chama, by the way.
I haven't been at Sugarite Canyon SP in a year or two, so I can't vouch for the cell phone internet situation there, but I wouldn't hold my breath--it's pretty remote.
While we're on the subject, Storrie Lake SP has an adequate Verizon cell signal, but internet is only available at the slower 1xRTT speed--no EVDO here.

Thank you Kate & Andy, for your reply. We deal with some medical issues that make me want to stay within 911 cell phone range if at all possible. Your information is helpful.

Familiar with Abiquiu Dam but not with Echo Amphitheater. I'll check it out.

Thank you. We would very much enjoy a visit.  Being basically thrifty(cheap) plus traveling with a dog, rules out a stay at your current high class digs. :-) We'll keep in touch on a visit.

To answer part of my own question.
Sugarite Canyon SP. No VZ cell phone, no internet.
We pulled  in on Monday afternoon and the RV campsites were all full. Never had that happen before on a Monday.
There is an overflow area, an open gravel parking lot, with room for perhaps five RV's plus a few overflow sites near Lake Alice.
If you are going there and need a satellite dish for some reason, the RV electric sites won't do. With one exception, they are very heavily wooded. The overflow area will work well.

When we stayed at Sugarite Canyon SP, we didn't stay down in the area with the electric; instead, we stayed at Soda Pocket campground...much nicer than the lower campground with electric, in our opinion.

Aaaaah, there's nothing to see down there in the hookup area, and the sites are cheek by jowl. If you didn't drive up to the Soda Camp campground, you missed some of the best views in the state... and as of Wednesday afternoon, there are probably half a dozen sites open here.
It's dry camping, and you have to climb a 1.5-mile unpaved road, but the road isn't at all bad (no washboard), and the sites are definitely worth it. From my three big back windows I can see across the mountains and valleys for miles! :-)
