We have a swamp cooler in our 1997 RB but I'm not sure of proper operation.

Paul, The swamp cooler is best used in dry, hot places.  It will usually drop the temperature about 10 degrees.

Here's the steps.
- Turn on water pump (if not hooked to city water) - Find the cutoff valve and turn it on. In my 1995 22' twin/king, the valve was in the storage cabinet beneath under the sink.
- Let the water run for a few minutes until the reservoir in full. There is a float that will shut the water off when it's full.
- Turn on the swamp cooler pump and let it run until the pad is totally wet.
- Open a few windows an inch or two.  You can somewhat control where the cool air goes by adjusting what windows you open and how far you open them.
- Turn on the swamp cooler fan.
- Enjoy.

Thanks, Buck!  My guess is that Summer in El Centro, CA will qualify as hot and dry (annual rainfall less than ONE INCH)

Hot and Dry is right! But remember that a swamp cooler only lowers the temperature a bit. At 110 degrees or so, it isn't going to do much for your overall comfort level.
