I don't think Brita distills the water and I wouldn't use it in my batteries.
It is a good filter though and we use one in our house. We have very good water to start with so leave the filter in for about a year.

Chris, They're awesome. I've owned Brita pitchers for years. They basically distill the water that you pour into it. You can use this water to pour into car batteries. You should filter ALL water that is meant for drinking or cooking.

The Britta web site also has information about recycling used filters.  In our house, we use a Britta pitcher in the bathroom, and a Britta faucet filter in the kitchen, primarily to improve the taste of our city water.  I tried a Pur filter, but it seemed to give a strange taste to the filtered water.
