Driving with E Brake on June 01, 2009, 10:27:51 am Yahoo Message Number: 102812Greetings from waypoint Flagstaff. Drove one half mile with E Brake engaged. Phew! What a smell. Do I go to defcom 1, 2, 3, or 4? You would think this more idiot proof (for idiots like me).

Re: Driving with E Brake on Reply #2 – June 01, 2009, 10:56:37 am Yahoo Message Number: 102817jaysdaze, I can't answer the question about the damage if any, but I have driven off with the E-brake on a couple of times also. (Too much power with the V-10. ). Apparently however the emergency brake on the Ford is one of the weak points. There has been some discussion earlier on the forum. I followed the excellent directions in the BrakeBuz.pdf of the Techsnoz group to install a buzzer to prevent this problem. I bought the buzzer from Radio Shack for a few dollars and it was simple to install.Barry Where are we? http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=122

Jay, you are not alone....been there, done that, had Terry T. install a really obnoxious reminder buzzer. In addition to installing the buzzer, for your piece of mind, you might want to have the brake checked out.Lorna Marathon, FL http://uppity-woman.blogspot.com/

That version of the emergency brake was not one of Fords "Better Ideas". It is, in fact, a terrible system. When you apply the e-break there are brake shoes that grab onto the drive shaft. The smell you refer to was the burning of the shoes as you drove along with the brake applied. The brake shoes are most likely glazed to the point of useless. That's what happened to mine. It's nothing that about $1,500.00!! (yes, fifteen hundred)cannot fix. Unless you get real lucky and have one of the few model years that have replaceable shoes, you will find that Ford sells only the entire e-brake unit. Right at $1,100 plus installation. Call your local Ford dealer. Give them the model year. Then sit down, cross your fingers & toes and hope the pads can be replaced. That will be a $500+- repair job.EdFrom beautiful Pella, Iowa.
