I can concur heartily on the use of the Post Office one-rate boxes Priority Mail...they have two different boxes at one price and a third box which holds more for a higher price...our motto is:  If it fits, it ships...we've saved lots and lots of money by using them.  As a matter of fact, could be the cheapest thing in RV-ing!

We have in the past, when settling into a vacation condo for a few weeks in the past, utilized FedEx Ground to ship clothes, books, vacation etc., to the condo, and when returning home, ship all that out-of-season stuff back home.  No luggage hassles.  Very reasonable $$$; plan on up to 10 days.
We have our caretaker ship a box or two when we settle someplace and when the souvenirs, books, presents, etc. need to be off-loaded, they go home one-rate.  We have found except for the Christmas season, our one-rate Priority Mail boxes from ME to NM or FL have arrived in 3 working days; Christmas lengthened that to 7.
The price now is over $8 per box, but well worth it, IMHO. And when 2 or 3 NEW YORKERs plus a VANITY FAIR arrive in one box....Nirvana!

Back in the day when we used to fly on vacation, we'd mail our dirty laundry home so we'd have room for souvenirs in our luggage.  It always worked for us.

Another option to boxes is to put all your clothes in a pillowcase and sew the end shut and mail it that way.  When I was working (36 years at the PO) we used to get packages of clothes from overseas this way all the time.  It often saves on postage since you're only paying for what you mail, no packaging.

For forwarded mail and such, we also use the flat rate boxes.

The pillowcase trick is a new one on me! How cool! Best I can say we ever did was in college (and beyond) was to take old underwear and old clothes on overseas trips and leave the oldies behind as the trip wound down...thus, room for souvenirs. I'm sure there are a couple of hotel lost-and-found offices awaiting the call that will never come.
Maybe Don could leave his neighbor a few old pillowcases and a needle and thread!
