It's strange what questions one comes up with during one's research

A man decides to go fulltiming in his Lazydaze throughout every state in the USA (including Alaska and Hawaii).

He further decides that he will apportion his time in each state using/by its ratio in square miles to the USA as a whole.
 For how long must he travel before finally spending one day in Rhode Island?

Rhode Island is 1044 square miles,  the entire US is 3,537,438.  So the ratio is 1:3,388 and one day in RI would follow 3387 days in the rest of the US, or over 9 years.
 For convenience, he might just round this off to one day for each 1,000 square miles, even though this would mean spending 572 of his days in Alaska and 82 days in Kansas.
