"On one of our trips to southern California (Washington to Los Angeles area via I-5) we stopped for gas at one of the "travel plazas" and there was a guy parked on the street selling oranges from the back of his truck. They were wonderful and well-priced. Anybody have a clue where this was?"

Could be anywhere in Southern California. There are people selling fruit out of the back of their trucks and cars all over. Every time I go to Home Depot, there is someone selling something.
Problem is the economy is slowing down for day laborers so they are doing whatever they can.

In a pinch, you could always try a supermarket

Could be tangelos if they were necked at the base.  A rather odd shape for an orange. Very tasty. Bought my first tangelos at a self serve stand in the boonies of Southern California.

"rfarkle" Larry is correct. There are street vendors in the left hand turn bays on major streets; in the Lowes parking lot; Home Depot; at the Malls selling all kinds of fruits and other things. You should have no problem finding oranges among them! Steve

Thanks for the useful reply.  We're hoping to find someone near where we buy gas and the guy we saw before was conveniently located.

I appreciate the info. This guy could also have been on Hwy
99...we've used that route in the past, too.  We'll keep an eye out as it sounds like there shouldn't be a problem finding someone.
