Hello Everyone,

I know the insurance questions have been talked about many times in this group. So please excuse my bringing it up again.  I have started doing my homework with checking the databases and looking other places for info.  I have some of the names of the "big" carries of RV specific insurances and am going to start digging into their small print.  I just want to take advantage of your leg work and experience and seek your imput into why you chose the carrier that you did.  I'd like to hear the good and the bad.  We have owned 2 fifth wheels in the past but have never had specific coverage for an RV.  I guess we were lucky that the occasion didn't arise where we had to find out just what coverage we had, or did not have.

We hope to pick up our new 27' MB around the end of April.  We live in Washington state and are not full timers.  I know there are many variables involved in the insurance game. I am just one of those guys that trys to get all the info I can before I make a decision.  Linda thinks that I overkill at times with my "research".

I appreciate any input you would like to send our way.

Thanks again and have a good day!

lBill & Linda I live in NH and insure my LD with Drive Insurance (a Progressive Insurance affiliate). I selected them because of a good reputation for RV insurance, they insure for full replacement value and they drop my deductibles by 25% for each claim free year.

Our friend Nate Walker from your neck of the woods recommended that we look at Progressive.  We did, liked what we found, and have been with them for the past two years.  Their rates are great and their coverage - full replacement value - is superb.
Go to their web site and you can pick and choose the coverage you want with instant rates.

The first listing is one of an insurance broker, Miller Insurance; they "shop" policies form several insurers/underwriters.
The rest are insurance "providers".

My coverage is with Foremost; I haven't had need of any coverage yet, thankfully, so I can't comment on claims service. One very important feature of any RV insurance policy is "full replacement cost" coverage; be sure your policy includes this. I also suggest going with as high a deductible as you can comfortably manage; this can make a definite difference in your premiums.  And, I'm sure you're aware of the many "variables" that affect premium costs: location, ages of drivers, driving records, coverage of additional properties by the same insurance carrier, etc.  The cheapest coverage isn't always the "best" deal, of course!

Good luck with your selection process!

Joan, AON and Explorer are also brokers.  Another insurance broker is Gilbert RV Insurance, www.rv-insurance.com .
The last one listed is for GMAC.  Since this is the company that Good Sam and Camping World (and probably other "Affinity Group" companies) use for their RV insurance, it would be interesting to get a quote directly from GMAC and then compare it with a quote from them through Good Sam or Camping World to see if there is any difference in annual premium.
I would certainly recommend getting total loss replacement coverage.  What this does is replace your RV with an equivalent NEW RV is the case of a total loss within the first 5 years.  After the first 5 years, the amount you receive in the case of a total loss would be the amount you paid for the rig.  Without total loss replacement coverage, all you'd get in the case of a total loss would be the current value of the RV.  That could be a difference of several thousand dollars!!!

--- THANKS for the correction, Linda; I hope I didn't confuse anybody! My mind was not entirely on my post, as a few things were going on at once -- the pruner arrived to do the fruit trees and needed "guidance", the phone rang, and the cat threw up on the rug. My multi-tasking skills have suffered a decline since I retired!  ;-)

We researched most of the companies listed when we purchased ours last October. Progressive had the most user friendly website and far and away the best price.
Unlike some of the large insurers out there they have RV specific coverages as opposed to an automobile policy. The policy covers replacement cost for the first 5 years. It also appears that you will get the best rate from them by dealing direct via the internet.

Thanks Jim,
Progressive keeps popping up as I talk to people.  I'm going to give them a good look.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Bill, we have Progressive.  Here's my tip for Progressive:
You can get an instant price quote at their website.  However, if you return later, the price will jump (like 5% or so increase).  I think they know they have you if you have returned.
So check all your prices before going to Progressive and be seriously ready to buy that policy when you first check it out online.
We added the $30 emergency towing and then paid a little more for the long-distance (2500 miles?) towing option.

Hope that helps, Tessa in TX

Please keep in mind when buying a new LD that Ford has a great warranty when it comes to towing within the first three years.

We also use Progressive.
When shopping for RV insurance -- particularly if you're shopping for fulltimer's insurance -- pay special attention to the level of personal contents coverage an insurance company offers.
When we bought our new fiver and were shopping for fulltimer's insurance, we received a quote from National Interstate (through AON, I think).  While NI had the lowest annual premium, they would only provide contents coverage that was 20% of the purchase price of the rig.  In our case, that didn't even begin to cover all the *stuff* we carried.  So we ended up with Progressive who, while their annual premium was a bit more, allowed us to set the contents coverage to the level we needed.
This is really only a concern for fulltimers, since most homeowner's insurance policies will cover contents of an RV.

Linda,
Most HO policies limit the coverage for personal property while away from the residence premises to 10% of the total limit for personal property. That may not be a problem for those who aren't full time but you need to check your coverage limits.

I went with Progressive also, but went through RV America Insurance as the 'broker'.  They were able to give a better deal than direct through Progressive.  They also have been helpful when setting up insurance for cars and motorcycles for me.

David,

Thanks for the suggestion about RV America.  I'll check that out.

Have a good evening.

David,
Regarding the prices. Is that comparing a Progressive quote directly via the internet or through a broker?

If I remember correctly it was a little bit of both.  I also remember the price going up on the Internet quotes as somebody else mentioned.
I tried RV America because they were going shop around for me at different companies.  They must still get some cut but I suppose they get discounts for bringing in bulk customers.
