We are taking Gracie up to Gardnerville this week. First we are going to Sacramento to a boat show at the fairgrounds and then see what we can see up towards Lake Tahoe, and maybe Carson City, ending in Gardnerville at our son's place Wed night or Thurs morning. Any ideas of where to stay Monday and Tuesday that is kept open this time of year? What roads will be open? Anything besides the beautiful country that we should see?
Do you think we should stay down in low country until we need to be in Gardnerville? We have a little electric heater to help our furnace along and warm blankets. Since we'll be in Gracie, or have her plugged in with the heater on, nothing important should freeze, right? If our tanks freeze, they will thaw eventually.  :-)
We got a CB and put it in but haven't really heard much on it yet. Not sure if we need to do some fine tuning or if we aren't in range of any truckers. If it's working right, then things sure have changed in the CB world since I last had one 25 years ago. There was CB chatter all the time.

Denise, Garth,
You might want to check the on-line weather forecast for your travels.

It's going to be cold here

Denise,
The roads are all open. My preference would be to come east on 50, then just as you drop into the Tahoe basin, take Hwy 89 towards Markleeville (Luther Pass). Left on Hwy 88 at the "T" intersection and 88 will take you down into the Carson Valley - - very pretty scenery.
At the intersection of 88 and Hwy 395 (north end of Minden), take a right on 395 and go less than a mile to the Carson Valley Inn RV park on the left side of the road. It'll be just past the B of A on the right side - can't miss it. They'll have vacancies and it's a good place to stay.

I can second that recommendation. The bathrooms are sterling, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. And, if you like casino action, they have a very nice smallish casino plus several very nice restaurants, ranging from a pleasant coffee shop with an extensive menu to a couple of fancier venues. We almost always eat at Katie's (the coffee shop) and have had good luck with the slots there.

Thank you all for your great hints and ideas! They are great!
We will stay at the Carson Valley Inn and have breakfast there at least once. We'll check out the boomtown and of course go to Cabalas. :-) We've been to a Bass Pro and that was impressive! We'll check out the RV park close by. We'll check out the RV park on the south shore of the lake. I found it on the net and it did say it was open year around. We may decide we can do without hookups, but likely I'll decide it's too cold without that extra heater.
The Patagonia outlet and Sierra Trading Post sounds like fun.  Virginia City and Genoa sounds like nice places to explore too. Garth's sister lives in Placerville so we might get to swing by there and see her. If it's not too cold, we can try the Truckee walk, if it is, we can walk the casinos.
Mom and Dad had cattle pastured up around Gardnerville and so did a little sight seeing while they were there. They talked about Carson Valley Inn and Sharky's and in the olden days, Sharkey had the biggest best prime rib. They said last time they were there, it was just so so. So breakfast there too.
We have been wanting to get up to that area to sight see and to visit Garth's son for a long time and just decided to go now, even if it isn't the best weather for it. We hope to go again in the summer and enjoy fishing and warm weather.
We are stopping by a boat store by Fresno on the way up and see there may be that nasty fog so we'll watch that and maybe plan on not getting there until it lifts a bit. My sis lives over there and of course is used to it. The faster highways in that thick fog is what scares me!
Thanks again so much for all your help. I know we will have a great adventure!

See ya, Garth and Denise Toby, Mozie and Meiko Gracie the 02 blue 23ft RB

I completely forgot about Sharkeys. This is a truly old-fashioned casino, that you will not see the likes of anywhere else. The quantity of valuable and amazing sports memorabilia on its walls could occupy you for most of a day, just reading and looking! I won a nice jackpot there, on the nickel slots.

It was founded by the boxing champion Jack Sharkey, probably in the 1930s, but I don't know the exact date. It's where all the old-timers go...fun for people-watching along with everything else.
