Analog cell phones slated to go dead

Starting in 2009, the original analog cell phone network will start shutting down under a 2002 FCC decision.
Most of you probably already have digital-capable phones, but if you don't, you'd better start thinking about getting one--your analog phone will go silent in a year or so.

So will 500,000 pre-2004 cars with GM's OnStar system, by the way.
Most are not upgradable, so OnStar will simply stop working for those owners. So will 400,000 home alarm systems, and about a million automated utility meter readers, irrigation controls, refrigerated shipping containers, and truck-tracking systems.

Just thought you'd like to know. :-)
