Quartzsite boondocking

We are planning on boondocking a few nights near Quartzsite later this month.  I don't think we want to pay the $40 for a 14 day permit in the LTVAs, for such a short stay.  I've seen several recommendations for the Plomosa Road area north of town.  Anyone have any experience out there? Can we use the dump at the La Posa LTVA?  How bad is the traffic into Quartzsite from the north?  Any times of day better or worse?  I seem to recall that there is a good Verizon signal around Quartzsite.  Any EVDO service?

There are free 14-day BLM areas surrounding Quartzsite.  Here are the directions to all of them: http://www.goldledge.com/features/docs_html/qblm_camping.html

The area out on Plomosa Road is a good area...with the exception of the one south of town (south of the LTVAs), it's the one fartherest out.

No (unless you pay the $40).  However, there's the Pit Stop on the east side of AZ-95 north of Main Street where you can dump, take on fresh water, and get propane tanks filled for $$, of course.  It'll be pretty busy in January, but they have a pretty good system set up for getting you in and out as quickly as possible.

If you're going to be there when the RV Show is going, the roads are going to be crowded no matter where you stay...just bring an abundance of patience.  Probably the best time to do would be first thing in the morning or in the afternoon around dinner time.

The Verizon cell phone signal is good.  I'm not sure about EVDO since we don't use a Verizon air card, but Sprint air cards have EVDO service in Quartzsite, so I can't imagine Verizon doesn't.
