Newcomer/Pick-up report pre-owned LD – long story.

Hi all,
After almost 4 years of reading every posting in this group, I finally found a very nice and well maintained 2000 MB.
My name is Frans Liebert and my wife's name is Elly. We have been RV'ers since we moved from Holland to the US in 1982. We always rented from Cruise America. After being a member of the RV Consumer Group, I came to the conclusion that the LD was one of the best RV's in its group and I joint the LD group. We visited the factory two years ago and came to the conclusion that a MB was the perfect layout considering grand children. I would like to thank all the members who have given their expertise and support over last couple of years.
Since my retirement in January 2007 I have been looking for a MB.  It is some times frustrating, a lot of times I was too late- coach was sold, wrong color, not all the options.

But suddenly, things changed, it was November 6, when the "Edges" - very nice people-from Burbank, CA posted their beautiful LD for sale.
On Thursday November 8, I was in contact with Tim Pease (formerly with LD) to inspect the coach on Saturday, November 10. I need to plug Tim here, because without his expertise I would not have been comfortable in buying  a RV long distance. He made an excellent report and listed some minor defects that were taken care of before the actual sale. It was money well spent. You can reach Tim Pease at " " for all your inspections.

After receiving the report I told the Edges that I wanted to buy the coach. So we - my youngest son (30) and I - flew on Thursday, November 15 to LAX, drove to Burbank to see the LD in person. It was a beautiful coach, very well maintained.  After looking the coach over we went to my bank for transferring my funds to the Edges, who agreed upon a cashier's check. Because of the different banks -one was a Credit Union- a wire transfer could take up a couple of days to clear.
The Edges wanted something in their hands instead of waiting – I can agree with that.
After the money deal, we had an elaborate transfer of knowledge from somebody who has owned and took care of a LD for seven years to some one who had RV experience but did not know the in and outs of this coach.
After the rental car return to Burbank airport, we said good bye to Keith and Marlee Edge. It was a sad farewell for them but a happy beginning for us.
We left Burbank around 3:30PM and it took us three full hours to reach Barstow (only 120 miles), where we slept in the LD in the parking lot of a motel.
The next day, we drove roughly 650 miles from Barstow to Albuquerque where we stayed at the RT66 Casino- had a wonderful buffet and of course we lost some money. The RV parking places were very close to the trailer parking and therefore it was a little noisy. But the stay was free – no hook-ups.
The following day we drove another 650 miles to Tulsa, OK where we slept in a RV/Mobile park for $10 with elec.
At seven o'clock we were on the road again for our final stretch (420 miles) to Lake St Louis, MO, where we arrived a little bit after 2:00PM. My wife Elly was anxiously waiting for us – she just came back from visiting her 91 year old mother in the Netherlands. She was very impressed with the look and cleanness of the LD.
The next morning it was dumping the tanks and winterize the coach – they were expecting low twenties for the next couple days.
The LD is now in storage and we are awaiting warmer weather so we can do our maiden voyage.

My gas mileage for the more than 1800 miles was 9.33 miles / gal – average speed: 67mph, no air conditioning. The Ford engine ran flawless. However the fridge could not keep up with the driving. At the end of the driving day the water and the beer were not cold at all and the ice in the freezer started to melt. But the following morning everything was cold again. Is this normal? By the way the fridge was not full and ran on propane.
I apologize for the long story and I  do hope to meet my fellow LD'ers in the near future.

Congratulations, Frans and Elly!  Your long drive back reminded me of my own pick-up trip just over a year ago.  May you enjoy many happy & safe miles with your new "baby".

About your fridge...that doesn't sound normal.  Mine stayed cold on the trip back.  There was a thread not long ago about folks who had problems with the fridge flame dying when on the road.  I'm sure someone will be able to help you solve the problem.
