Furnace wasp screen
Yahoo Message Number: 86390
One January many years ago, I was working in my SOB and turned  on the furnace. I thought a neighbor was barbecuing meat, but it was the paper  wasps in my heater. They were carbonized. A piece of 1/2"emt conduit hooked to  my shop vac cleaned up the mess. I put on a screen, and it has been there  since.
I bought a one piece rectangular one for Bluebelle in 2000. I  notice the 'boilerplate' on the package in Camping World's ad, states to remove  the screen during use. I've never done that on the LD or the SOB and never had a problem. Does anybody want to venture a guess why that statement is there? Of course you need to keep the screen clear of leaves, bushes, etc.  Ron and Bluebelle a '99TKB

Ron, Mike Sylvester, The RV Guy, advised that I not install one of these screens because it restricts air flow during operation.

Perhaps those who have screens will comment.

Well, while I normally agree with Mike on most things, after he fixed Chris & Franks furnace (removing the mud daubers nest that was inside), he admitted that the screen might not be such a bad idea.
That said, I believe that the furnace maker says that using one will void your warranty, so we always remove it before we take Cholula anywhere for service.

As Kate noted, Mike has changed his mind on this. Two years ago he advised me to remove the one I had on. (I did, put four rubber feet on it, and have been using it in the kitchen ever since as a tray to hold cherry tomatoes, a staple of my diet. ;-) But this year he advised me to put one on, and I did.

In retrospect, I think he was wrong about removing it. It's claimed that it could impede airflow, but I just can't imagine any significant effect, given the large surface area of the rectangular screen and the fairly coarse mesh. (The small round ones might be a different story--if you're going to get one of these screens, get the rectangular version.) And anyway, the amount of airflow it blocks is nothing compared to the amount blocked by a wasp nest or two! :-)

As for the "Remove before use" warning on the packaging, I'm pretty sure it falls into the "our lawyers made us say this" category. I don't know anybody who does that--I certainly don't!

I installed the JCJ Enterprises M200 Mud Dauber Screen on my furnace over three years ago.  I have never had a problem and it has never been removed since installed.  I looked at the M300 smaller round ones but they still leave a small gap at the bottom of the intake/exhaust holes when installed where as the M200 seals all the way around.

I installed this screen cover today. The little round ones allowed a gap on the bottom. On the package it states just to check them once a month  and clean when necessary to maintain proper air flow. No need to remove them while in use. The RV tech also stated that they did not need to be removed.
