The Rally- Perry, GA 2008: March 14-17

Hey Friends!

Who's headed to The Rally in Georgia?  We are!  We were headed to Disney for Spring Break that week anyway.  I was thrilled to learn that if we go a few days earlier, we could attend. Perry, GA is south of Atlanta and Macon on I-75.

Now, I've never attended a rally other than the Balloon Fiesta, and that was SO FUN!
Has anyone been to this big rally?  It was in Oregon last year, right?
I'm seeking your advice, fair warning, etc before I register.  But if I get the green light and no other hapless sap (I mean "wonderful volunteer") steps up to organize us, I might see if we can stage to arrive together.  Round up the cattle.  Herd the cats.
I've emailed with the organizers and they said that an LD group would need to arrive together at the same time.  Otherwise we can put up notices on the bulletin board regarding where and when to meet.  With 4500-5000 rigs expected, they park one area at a time.  I explained the way Marial took care of us at the Balloon Fiesta, but no can do.  She suggested we meet at the nearby Perry, GA Wal-Mart and then drive over together to get parked together.
So if we met Friday around 12:00 noon (I'm still thinking this through) then maybe that would be a good time to come in.  They are still working on the schdule, so I'm not sure what time activities start on Friday.  If others are getting there early and want to stage together, we could always have LD'ers staging multiple days so at least we have several little camps.
Is anyone else interested in going?  We could have potlucks, go to the conferences, tour rigs, they have a kids' program, play.

If so, we can organize.  Just let me know!

Oh you're killing me!  Of course I would LOVE to meet up with the SE LD'ers!  I don't think there would be a nicer, more fun group anywhere.  But this is THE Rally.  Would any amount of convincing get you to The Rally instead?  For just this one weekend?? Waaaaa, Torn

We attended the very first one held in Gillette, WY several years ago.

Would we go again? No.

Why?  Way too big!
The very first "Rally" garnered 5,000+ rigs...about 10,000 people, more or less.  I can imagine that, as they've grown in popularity, they attract even more people.  If you like people parked cheek to jowl, and lots and lots of people, then you'll probably enjoy it.  It's not for us...we much prefer smaller, more intimate get togethers, like the Boomer get together we attended this summer north of Buena Vista, CO that had around 20 rigs.
One thing that made it unpleasant for us, too, was that the person parked right next to us pulled out a huge INDUSTRIAL generator and proceeded to fire it up.  It was so loud, you couldn't hear yourself think, not to mention the fumes!  I believe that someone had a little talk with them, though, as that was the first -- and last -- time the generator was turned on.

Why?  Way too big! --- Oh, yeah; the "cast of thousands" stuff doesn't appeal to me, either! I can't even find my car in the parking lot; with that many rigs, I'd likely be wandering around Perry until the masses finally cleared out.

Here's a web page for "The Rally":

There's a recap of the 2007 rally held in Oregon, and at page left you'll find many links to all the doins' in Georgia in March.
It's not an event to everyone's tastes, but, if you go, have a great time!

Yet another famous LD'er shows up on the net- this time on the Life on Wheels instructor site!  Joan, is that your picture 5th from the bottom (saving the best for last, obviously)?

I looked up your cooking articles too:

and I'm sure there are many more to find.
Wow, that is really impressive!  We're lucky to benefit from all your knowledge- but we already knew that.

Are you planning to teach at any future Life on Wheels seminars?

Very exciting! Tessa in TX

As comfortable as she in front of any group starving for information, I think our Joan is a little shy about tooting her own horn!  Her contributions on this board are only a tease.  Joan was born to teach and not only loves sharing information, she makes the experience entertaining, lively and memorable!
Yes, I believe she has signed on to teach some Life OnWheels classes in March, 2008 on the Tucson campus, and Joan will have to tell you the subject matter she has chosen this time.  (She has done many other presentations and seminars beyond cooking and genealogy.)

In the meantime, Tessa and others, you might want to check out her three-part series in "RVersonline," called "The (Long) Road to a Lazy Daze."  It should be required reading for anyone thinking of buying a Lazy Daze, but it's also a fun read for those fortunate to already own one as it sure does bring back memories!

Also, while we're on the subject of LOW, here's a reminder to check our archives for information and testimonials about the LOW projects -- a different kind of "rally" but for sure one of the very best for those interested in knowing more about RVs and RVing.

Exciting stuff:  The February issue of Motorhome Magazine came yesterday and in the RV Education article (p. 12) they mention:

"When it comes to rallies that include seminars, none compare with the extensive offerings at The Rally. . . which will occur in Perry, GA, March 14-17.  Not only does this four-day event include both a huge RV show and product and service booths, but has the most extensive seminar progam offered at any rally.  Many nationally known RV writers offer their expertise along with experts with various backgrounds and fields involving the RV lifestyle."

That's from Gaylord Maxwell's column, the founder of the "Life on Wheels" conferences.  Just think how smart we'll be!  And acres of RV venders and suppliers- ummm-umm!  Can't wait!
Also in this month's issue is a whole article on fun things to do in the area entitled, "Georgia Crossroads:  Perry, GA, and the Southern Heartland" (p. 41).  Fun, fun, FUN!

Come join us if you like!

10 weeks and counting,

:) Tessa in TX (more info below if you want to park with our LD group)
