LP Gas Leak Detector

Hi Everyone.  We purchased a 2000 23.5 FL about a month ago and have been traveling in it every since and are very much in love.  One problem we are having is with the LP leak detector going off quite often, even when we have the propane turned off.  Has anyone else had this problem?  We haven't checked for leaks yet, we smell no propane, so we wonder if maybe if it is just old and needs to replaced, or??? Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Sally,
It could be your LP gas detector is overly sensitive.  My rig had one that was eventually replaced for that very reason.
On the other hand, these detector are not specific propane detectors and trigger on a lot of other volatile stuff.  That includes all kinds of cleaning solvents, things like hair spray, after shave lotion, folks passing gas, and even overly ripe bananas!  So first look around at what you have in the vicinity.

It's probably just a matter that it needs to be replaced...these detectors have a finite life, and I'd think 7 years would be at the outer limits of it's useful lifespan.  As Alex said, they also respond to other environmental contaminates.
However, because this is such a huge safety issue, I'd take your rig to a certified propane dealer, or an RV service center that has a certified propane guy/gal on staff, and have it check out just to be sure there's no leak.

Sally My first suggestion would be to check for leaks now. For a very nominal fee you can have a leak-down test done and make sure you have no leaks.  And if your system is sound then:

At that point I would consider replacing the detector..

Ours done the exact same thing... Our propane was off as well... I had sprayed some bug spray for ants and believed that it set it off.
It appears other environmental things can set it off as well. I'm going to have my propane checked just to make sure.

Mine did the same thing...I replaced it. Bought the new at Lazy Daze after Steve said he had noticed a few of the same age doing the same thing.

Easy to replace.

Hi Everyone,  I want to reallly thank everyone for your response to my question on the LP Gas detector.  The first time it went off, we sprayed some hair spray in here, but other times, I dont know.  It is not every day, just every now and then.  We will definetly get it checked out by a certified propane person and go from there.  Thank you again so very much for your responses!

Sally One other thing that has been hinted at but I am not sure has been clearly stated is they al more prone to going off with low voltage.

We just had our rig to the factory. On the list was an LP detector going off at random times.  Vince  checked the LP line and found no leakage or use.  He says the detectors go bad and just plopped in a new one. Kate
