For those who are looking for a convenient way to make a really good cup of coffee with no mess and little effort, I have a suggestion to consider.
I recently purchased an AeroPress coffee and espresso maker that makes some of the best coffee I have ever tasted and the product sells for only $26.00.  It works somewhat like a french press but the plunger pushes the coffee out the bottom thru a filter into the cup.  Cleanup involves twisting off the bottom and ejecting the compressed grounds by pushing the plunger on down.  The filters are disposable but can be reused if desired.  A simple rinse of the parts and it is clean.

Details and customer reviews are at http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress_story.htm

Not too many stores sell them and I ordered mine from http://www.localsonlycoffee.com

This product is good enough that we have retired our very nice drip coffee maker for full-time use at home and will take it with us as we travel as it takes up very little space and needs only a source of hot water to function.  I have no association with either of the companies mentioned above.  Just passing on a recommendation for a product that has really impressed me.

Well, that looks good, Monti, and I thank you for sharing it and all, but I just dunno.
"Camping" used to mean smashing the beans on a flat rock with your gun butt, boiling it until it turned black enough, then pouring it into your favorite mug. The gourmet in the crowd was the one who strained his through an old sock to get out the bugs and grit.

We have all become so hoity-toity I just can't stand it no more.

PS You sound like a good guy, and we meet up any time, you're welcome to come over for a real cuppa joe.

You mean this ISN'T the way you're supposed to make coffee?! ;-)

---- Will, you forgot to throw in a couple of eggshells into the old graniteware pot to "settle" the grounds, and don't forget to use your shirttail to wipe out the "tin" cup before pouring the sludge into it!

Well, Thanks to you, I just snorted my coffee up my nose and spit it out onto the computer screen, laughing too hard.

OK Monti, I really like the looks and design of that coffee press.  One question that I couldn't find on the web pages, is it glass or heavy acrylic?  If it's not glass, I'm going to get one.  Glass.... well, it's just too much of a storage problem and I'll probably stick with my stainless french press. This one does look so much easier to clean than the french press, that's the main reason I'd want one.

It is heavy acrilic and pretty much indestructible short of running over it with your LD.  It's extremely easy to clean and leaves no sediment in the cup.

Monti,
After reading your 5 Star testamonial (left intact below), I ordered the AeroPress coffee/espresso maker.  Mine arrived yesterday and it is all that you said.  It does make a delicious cup of coffee or espresso.  Thank you.

Tom,

Glad you like it.  It is amazing how even ordinary coffee can taste so good when prepared this way.

For anyone who would like to see one in a store, the listing of places that sell them is here:

I ordered one on your recommendation as well Monti.  It arrived at our friend's house while we were in NoCal so we just tried it yesterday.  I really like it too.  We love french press coffee and are pretty happy with our Nissan stainless press but it is a pain to clean so I was willing to try something else.  I like it.  It's good coffee and there is no sludge in the bottom of the cup!  It seems odd to add hot water to the coffee to fill the cup but it tastes really good.  I also think it will be great for making iced coffee as it is a concentrate.
Cleaning is a big improvement over the press as you just push the grounds and filter on out and into the trash, no filling with water and dumping outside so the grounds don't get into the grey tank.
**aside:  I may have to change my  birthday wish next year.  Every year since we went on the road I've had one request for my birthday, that I not have to wash the coffee pot for a year.  So far, I've gotten it every year! Mimi got smart a few years ago and started asking not to have to make the bed for a year on her birthday.  With this new coffeepot, I think it is time to renegotiate!

Thanks for posting your impressions of the AeroPress. If you give something a thumbs up, it worth considering.
The coffee discussions have gone on for years on the best and easiest ways of making a good cup without a huge cleanup problem.
I've always like a French press but it uses too much water to clean.
The AeroPress seem to offer the best of both worlds and it cheaper and a lot smaller than the Coleman stovetop coffee maker we are now using.
The Coleman works fine but it is slow. I never did figure out to light the burner remotely from the bunk .

Well, I guess nothing excites us coffee freak's Pavlovian reflexes like a new brew toy.  Now I'm gonna have to get me one of those, then I'll have to get one of them fancy grinders, and then some extra filters; lordy, where will it ever end?

At least it's sure to be better than the brown instant stuff that used to come with the C-Rations, mixed up with the hot water from the jeep radiator. And if it wasn't hot enough you had to wait while someone ran it a couple more times up and down the hill.
Anyways, here's my contribution to this on-going off-topic digression: a video showing the brewing process

Ours arrived two days ago.  I have had to give up coffee, so haven't tasted the output, but my husband is quite thrilled.  It is better than what he remembers from his years in Louisiana with similarly-brewed coffee, only without the pusher mechanism.  It seems to take more ground coffee to produce the desired volume, but he says the taste is smooth, and far superior to anything else he has ever had.

Our thanks to Monti, too!  ;->
