Hope Island, WA. (Mason)
Yahoo Message Number: 64879
I am making reservations for our August/06 vacation. I found Hope Island State Park, but am confused by the directions. Has anyone stayed there? It stated that most people arrive by boat but can go by road. Is it difficult to drive in? We will be in our 26.5 LD and towing a Honda Civic.

Where did you read that you could drive to the Island?  According to the Washington State Parks website, Hope Island is reachable only by boat -- http://tinyurl.com/owuka .

I checked a couple of other websites, too, and they all said the same thing.

Maybe a bridge has recently been built connecting the island to the mainland?

Hi Linda,

You are right.
I think that the confusion might be from the wording on that Wa. State Park web site:

"Hope Island State Park is a 106-acre marine camping park on the western side of the state in Mason County, Puget Sound. This quiet island is reachable only by boat. Covered with old-growth forests and saltwater marshes, the park features a beach one-and-a-half miles long.

A vehicle parking permit is no longer required for day visits."

This had me going for a couple of seconds, too, but the statement about the vehicle permit is a general announcement pertaining to all Washington state parks that there is no longer a fee for day use. If you go to other Wa State Park web sites, it appears there also. It's just a humorous juxtaposition.

And not to worry, rosagypsy1313, there are a multitude of drop-dead gorgeous state and county parks here on the entire Olympic Peninsula to visit. This is also beautiful kayaking country, and here is a link to one description of a paddling trip in the area of interest:

We used to take our Catalina sailboat here. The currents around Hope island can reach 5 to 7 knots at ebb & flood tides. (no ferry) The islands you can get to by ferry in the lower Puget Sound are: Anderson, Ketron,(private) Mc Niel, (if you want to stay at the prison B&B) Fox Island, (has a bridge) and Vashon Island. I haven't researched staying at these places 'cause they are so close to home.
It would be better to stay at Gig Harbor RV Resort, then explore by toad until you find a campground you like.
Open all year 1-800-526-8311 105 wooded sites Heated pool Laundry Clean restrooms & showers Conveniently located for touring the South Sound region.

Another good place to stay is Kopachuck State Park.
http://tinyurl.com/nfk8z (see page #2 link bottom right) The park has no hook-ups, and is high use during the Summer. Tent campsites vary in size. Most will accommodate large RVs (without hookups). Some sites are smaller and are suitable only for smaller RVs or tents. Maximum site length is 35 feet (may have limited availability) All campsites are first-come, first-served.
