DVR n LD Winegard Dish

A Direct TV installer told me that he thinks that the DVR requires a special satellite dish, and the factory installed one (Winegard sp?) isn't going to work. He said he's not sure about that, and would check it out. HOWEVER. I think I have a better resource group than he has.

What say ye?

Sarah, I just replaced our old Directv receiver with a DVR from http://www.weaknees.com/   and it works great with our old 2002 LD installed Winegard Satellite dish. We just love the DVR capabilities.
That said though, there is a downside:  In order to record program "A" and "B", while you are watching program "C" does require a "Dual LNB" dish. Or as Directv states: "If you have a Single LNB sate dish antenna, you will need to upgrade to a Dual LNB for full functionality."  The italics and underline are mine because here's how we get almost "full functionality" using our old dish.  In our monthly Directv bill we pay for having the choice of watching both the East ( NYC ) or West ( LAX ) coast choice of programs. So . . I set up the evening's prime time programs we want to watch by beginning to record them at 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm. from the East coast ( NYC ).  Since DVR gives us the ability to watch a 'recorded' program while "recording" another we could begin viewing the first recorded 5 pm show at 6 pm. and the 6 pm show at 7 pm. etc.  Now if there were two shows we wanted to watch that were on at the same time, I would record one ( as above ) and schedule the other one to record at its West coast time  - since all of the 6 pm programs repeat on the West coast beginning at 8 pm.
Since the above works out for our, mostly, "plugged in" lifestyle, I haven't felt the need to call LD to see what they might charge to replace the Single LNB Dish with a Dual LNB Dish . . . but I am curious. I don't even know if a Dual can be "folded" for traveling ? And that also brings to mind the concept of an HDTV RV roof dish . Are the enclosed "dome" type satellite antenna capable of receiving HDTV ? In any case, if I were ordering a new LD these are things I would consider.

Let's clarify terms.
When you say "dual LNB" are you talking about a dish that has TWO LNBs (i.e., two "heads"), or a single LNB with 2 cable hookups at the bottom?
 Here's a website with some pictures: http://tinyurl.com/axddd
The very first picture is of an twin LNB (i.e., two "heads").  If you scroll down to the 5th picture, you will see a single "head" with 2 cable hookups...this type of LNB is referred to as a "dual" LNB.
If, in fact, you need a dish that has 2 separate "heads" (first picture), then the roof-mounted Winegard dish will not work because it is not "skewable."  Motosat does make a roof-mounted "skewable" dish, the MD500, that is currently just for Dish Network.  However, they say that they have another version that's coming out shortly that will be for DirecTV and DirecTV HDTV -- http://www.motosat.com/products/tv_md500/ .  Any of the domed dishes should work, too.
Now, if all you really need is a "dual" LNB (5th picture), then the single LNB currently on the Winegard roof-mounted dish can easily be switched out for a "dual" LNB...we did this on another RV we had.

At home, I replaced the Direct TV single LNB with a DirecTV "dual" LNB so that different rooms can watch different programs at the same time.
The "dual" LNB has one feedhorn and two coaxial "f" connectors on the bottom.  It fit right into the spot where the single LNB was.  I used the same dish and feed support arm.  So I would guess that it would also fit right onto the Winegard, because the Winegard looks much like the home antenna in the area of the LNB.  I happened to have a "dual" LNB that wasn't being used. You can order a dual LNB from direcTV or I would guess that satellite TV installers would have them.  The dual LNB requires a second coaxial cable into the house (or LD in your case.) This might be a problem as to how to route and seal the second coax wire thru the winegard.  I guess one would need to check with Winegard to see if that can be done.
