Vent hood cover opening while travelling
Yahoo Message Number: 64455
I buried this recent problem in a reply about Honda's so I will repeat it.
While driving back home last week the vent hood opened.  I have noticed that the inside lever, over the stove, was not really sitting in the lowest detent and that might be the problem.  It was a very windy day and I guess the wind was strong enough to pry open the vent hood cover on the outside wall.  Has anyone had this problem?  Any suggestions?  I am going to the stored RV this morning and will play with it and get the S/N and manufacturer info so I can contact them.  But if someone here has a solution that would be great.

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
I saw your vent hood question but it didn't compute for me so I thought someone else would pick it up.  We don't have a vent hood that opens manually as it seems yours does.  We have a switch and an electric vent fan but as far as I know it vents through a stack that stays open.  I could easily be wrong as I don't go on the roof much.  Still, there isn't a detent or a lever on the inside.  What year do you have? Perhaps they changed it.

Mike, The stovetop vent hood flap on our 2002 MB opens and closes with strong cross winds.  When windy condition exist I stuff a scrap piece of memory foam in the outside exhaust port covering the louvered vent. No more banging and clanging.

One must remember to remove it before using the vent hood fan.

That's the way it is on our LD, too.  However, it doesn't vent through the roof.  On our LD, the vent is on the side of the LD with a fixed cover over it (not one that has to be opened and closed).

Right you are Linda!  I just stuck my head out and the vent is on the side with a fixed piece of metal covering it.  Nothing to move or that opens or closes.

I haven't examined a recent LD in this regard, but I'd be very suprised if there were nothing blocking that vent. If that were the case, you'd have a mighty cold breeze blowing out of your stove hood all winter! In Gertie, and indeed in residential stove hoods, a hinged, weighted flap just *inside* the outer vent opening opens when the fan is turned on, and closes at other times to prevent drafts.

Mimi is really laughing at me right now because I keep getting up from the computer and poking around with the vent fan.  Yes, Andy, you are right.
There is a flap inside the exhaust from the stove that the force of the fan pushes open when running.  Outside that there are just slit vents and a metal cover on the outside of the rig.
None of it is manual though or even easily reached, I had to get a spatula to stick through the fan and push on it to see how it worked.

Andy, there is a fixed metal plate over the vent open only at the bottom.  I have never noticed wind blowing in the vent.  I have my office set up in the LD when we're in Quartzsite, and it's been quite windy here...the metal plate does a good job of keeping the wind out.

There is nothing to open or close.

Well, this is starting to get interesting! Shall we take a survey? ;-) So far, Gertie (1985) has an internal flap and Jonna's 2001 does too. Linda, are you sure your 2004 doesn't?

Andy,
My 2001 TK has (behind the metal mesh filter) a fan and a fan air forced opening flap to vent to the outside.
I'm sure if Linda popped off the mesh filter, turned on the hood light, then the hood fan, she would see a small flapper door being forced open by the fan air, and dropping to a closed position when the fan is turned off.

If that's not the case, it is starting to get interesting.

Andy, it probably does...I haven't looked.  But what I meant by "there's nothing to open or close" is there is nothing that WE have to open or close.
Sorry, I should have been more specific.

My 2005TB has the flap in the exhaust

I replaced the "hinge" on the metal flap over my stove.  It is a piece of duct tape.  Mine was about eight years old and I don't remember why I decided to replace it but I do remember it being a little tight in there.
If my memory serves me correctly, I put a piece of duct tape on each side with about 1/8 inch between the metal flap and the housing to act as the hinge.  It has been working great ever since.
