Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta-RV Guy

Here's an update from Marial Gertz, who is coordinating our GTG at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque this fall. http://www.aibf.org/ She sent it out to those of us who have sent her our money.

It looks like we have 13-14 Lazy Dazers already signed up to park together at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque this fall. If you decide at the last minute that you want to come, please be advised that you CAN. There seemed to always be room for more, having experienced this event last year. There are several of us on this list who have attended, and we can try to field your questions, if you have any.

(Marial Gertz sent this to the folks who have already signed up.) Sarah has mentioned but I would like to repeat that we will have one of the best RV maintenance/repair/installer around, at the Balloon Fiesta.  Mile Sylvester (certified tech) has a mobile repair truck so he comes to us where we are parked.  During the time between morning launch and evening nightglow, several of us have our rigs maintained for the year.  The thing I like about Mike is he also teaches as he is doing.  And I can attest that he is very kind to the mechanically challenged.
 The one thing he requests is a reservation, so if you have something you would like done while at the Fiesta, let him know.  Check out his website at TheRVGuyNM dot com, his email address is TheRVGuyNM at yahoo dot com.  His phone is 505-228-1389.
 Our reservations are in but if anyone inquires about the Fiesta they have not missed it, we can still add people.  Just give them my email address and I can do the paperwork to get additional names added to the group.

PS from Sarah - Mike also does lots of other things - he installs auxillary braking systems, 12-V lights, antennas, seals the roof, install just about anything you can think of, and fixes most anything. So if you have a list of 'projects' that you'd like to have done while you're watching the balloons, contact Mike and get them done.

 I'll second that!  Mike is terrific. On Sarah's recommendation, I drove from Las Vegas (the real one!) to Albuerque last February to have Mike install my tow brake, and now while I'm here in Santa Fe for a week of opera, he did my tail-light booster. He does great work!

Hi David............Re your being in Santa Fe for the opera, can you tell us a little bit about it? Last year several of us on the LD list were talking about going there, but with one thing and another, we never got back to it.  I am assuming you are staying in your LD, where?  how do you get to the opera house?  Does the RV park have a shuttle?  (wishful thinking).   Any public transportation?  Did you make reservations ahead of time for your tickets?  I guess that would be a good idea.  How is the weather?  Any info you can give would be appreciated.  If you would rather e-mail off list  .   Oh, yes, how were the operas?

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. Wi-Fi at Santa Fe Skies RV Park where I stayed was a joke. It may have been "fi" but was certainly not "wi"! A very-much hit and miss thing. Right now I'm on my way home and am at J&H RV Park in Flagstaff.
Excellent wi-fi connection.

SFSkies RV is on the south side of SF. It's a little on the rustic side (even though new) but is a spectacular setting rather high up. It does get the wind. While it may look like a long way from the opera, driving time from SFSkies directly to SFOpera via rt. 599 (a kind of belt-way) & US 84 is quick and absolutely better than driving through Santa Fe. It took maybe  25-30 mins to get from RV to Opera every night. Of course I was driving my CRV toad. If one didn't have a toad, I'm not sure how you'd manage. I DID see a couple of RVs actually parked in the parking lot at the Opera however, so I guess that's the way to do it if one is "Toad-less in Santa Fe."
 Definitely make reservations ahead of time. Every night was sold out.
As Nam couldn't come, I stood at the entrance and had no problem selling my extra ticket all four nights. People were desperate for tickets! Santa Fe Opera has quite an international standing, and people come from all over to go to it every year. I bought my subscription a year ago when the discussion was going on here in this group.

4 nights: Barber of Seville, Turandot, Aiadamar, and Lucio Silla.
 I seem to always forget what a good score Barber is; really terrific writing.
 Turandot was an incredible spectacle; sets and costumes outshown the singing I'm afraid to say; but, hey, it's Puccini... the music is incredible.

Ainadamar is a new opera by Golijov... about the life and death of the Spanish poet, Federico Lorca and his murder by Franco's fascists.
Peter Sellars was the artistic director, and, if you know Sellars, you can imagine that it was absolutely incredible. Sellars, much to our surprise, gave the pre-opera lecture. It was spell-binding!!! (Tears come to my eyes just remembering it.) The opera itself is very avant garde and yet, at the same time, approachable. I think it is destined to be a part of the main-stream repetoire. I  guess you can tell... I loved it and was incredibly moved by it.
 I was disappointed in the fairly unknown Mozart opera, Lucio Silla. I think it needs to go back into the obscurity from whence it came! Don Giovanni it definitely isn't. But then, he was only eighteen when he wrote it. Anyway... my take: forgettable!
 Would I do this again? You bet! I know that my subscription material for next year is on my desk at home, and I'll definitely be renewing.
2006: Carmen, Magic Flute, Cinderella, Salome, Tempest.
Pretty impressive lineup.

And I'd recommend SFSkies, I guess, because of the very convenient driving connection.

BTW... as I'm typing this, there are three of us Lazy Daze lined up here at J&H in Flagstaff.  Feels like a convention.
