This a breakdown on the mpg on our last trip.

Total miles: 13277 (in 6 months)

Total gas: 1529 gal.

Avg. MPG: 8.68

Avg. MPG with toad: 8.3

Avg. MPG w/out toad: 10.6 (we sold the Jeep after 5 months)

Avg. MPG without toad and without Gearvendor overdrive: 9.4

The way we got the #'s:
We couldn't use the overdrive when we were towing. Not enough power.
We lost the Gearvendor for a couple of weeks, until we found someone to service it. Turns out it was low on oil and it won't operate until the oil level is normal again. No damage was done. Dumb luck for us.

Total cost for gas: $2983.45

Highest: $2.23 Gal. in Eureka NV

Lowest: $1.72 Gal. in Vidalia LA

LD: 1989 22'TK fuel injected Chevy 350

FWIW

"Based on previous data sumarized in the 'LD Estimated Gas Mileage.txt' file on the web site, your 'towing penalty' in MPG is surprisingly high.  The data seemed to indicate 0.5-1.0 mpg decrease when towing."

The big loss in mpg is most likely from not using overdrive when we towed. Another thought, duh! Most of our driving, after we sold the Jeep, was on flat land, heading back east. We take back roads and rarely exceed 50 mph. There's an added gizmo on the dash that tells us what our fuel consumption is. I'm not sure how accurate it is but it cures the lead foot syndrome. We tend to keep the needle in the "green" zone. If we see it drop we adjust our speed. That was much harder to do when towing.

Our daily driving distance was dictated by bird sightings ;-). We rarely managed to cover 200 miles.
