Shaking dog during drive time

Our Maltese, Zoe, shakes constantly during the drive portion of our trips.  Also she's very nervous and can't seem to be still.  Do any of you have this problem with your dogs?  What do you do? Thanks Sue

I'd suggest getting her wheels rebalanced. If that doesn't stop the shaking, new Bilstein shocks may be in order.

Thank you...that made my morning.
I will admit that putting the Bilstein Shocks on her would hold her down, so maybe that's a possibility.

Sue, pay no attention to these wiseacres ;).  We are the parents of a lovable but completely neurotic dog, and we use a calmative product, administered drop wise from a bottle, called Rescue Remedy. Type that into Google Search and you'll find out more than you want to know about it. I'm not much for this New Age herbal/flower essence business, but this stuff seems to work. And if your dog's behavior is getting to you, you can maybe take a hit from the bottle yourself.
Barring that, it's off to the vet for some prozac or something.

Will
PS:  If you do go for the rebalancing and Bilsteins, consider adding zerk fittings; they'll make her joints a lot easier to grease.

Our little Beagle/Terrier "Molly" has the same thing to the point where we thought she would have a heart attack.

We made a custom fit cardboard box to put between the seats and when Molly could not see the trees flying by she settled down.

We now have transferred that to a wooden box with a single entry point so she can have some peace.  Guess some are den animals and need "blinders" on so they can relax.

BTW she has settled down in the box so overtime she can even sleep which is a miracle for her.

You need to get the running gear balanced!

Sue...

Do you have a seat belt for your dog? Besides the idea of making a cozy riding bed for your dog, do consider a seat belt. You don't want him to be a flying object, if you have to stop fast, or have him try to get out in a panic over the pedals.
We attach our dog's seat belt to the passenger seat belt so he can be safe laying down between us. It worked fine. No problem for our dog seeing the scenery fly by...he has been blind for six years.

You might try crating her while you're in motion; many dogs (and cats) respond well to the secure den-like conditions of a crate, and are less nervous and anxious (and safer) when confined.  You can put a pad/cushion overlaid with a (washable) blanket or towel into the crate, and include a chew (or other) toy. You will want to get her used to sleeping/staying in the crate for periods of time before putting her into it for travel so she doesn't associate the crate with a bad experience.  Be sure to get a crate that fits the dog; too many owners buy a too-small or too-large crate, and the dog and the owners end up unhappy.  Check www.drsfostersmith.com for a good selection of all types of crates.  Good luck with this!

Shortly after we rescued our Mexican beach dogs, we had to move the LD.  That's when we discovered that the female was terrified when we were driving.  I don't have a real cure for you but I have sympathy.
Chica would stand in the middle aisle and shake as long as we were moving.  What we did was keep the blinds lowered in back so she couldn't see things moving past and we let her adjust.  She did get better, she's quite comfortable when we are moving now.  She still gets a little jittery when we start up if we have been parked for weeks, lowering the blinds again seems to make her better.  After a few hours we can open the blinds and she doesn't even look up out of her bed.

Here's some advice we got from our vet about our cats.  If you give them a tranquilizer for the first day or two they will realize that the sky didn't fall and you can stop using it.  They get through the initial fear on the tranq and stay calm long enough to realize they will be fine and they don't need the tranq after that.  Don't know if it will work on a dog or not.  The vet said you don't want their fear to feed on itself  so that they associate riding in the car or rv with fear and will automatically respond.  If they are calm and relaxed (however you do it) for awhile, they don't develop that response.

We crate our Bichon and it works great.  She went on her first trip at 4 months old and loves to travel.
