Change the drapes?

Well, I just love my little 'new' used coach, but the velvet drapes and valences are a bit much for my taste. Has anyone out there tackled taking them down/out and changing them for something less heavy looking? How'd you do it? They seem to be put up there to stay, and I do not (and will not) sew. With our '83 it distressed us a bit that about half of the window area was hidden.

We pulled down the upper valences - just a few screws - and I peeled back the material from the top. I then rip-sawed the wood backing strip so it was about half the former height, restapled the material back and trimmed off the excess. I reattached the mounting brackets and put it back up. It just covers the blind when completely retracted.

The curtains are stapled to wood trim strips. We removed those too and restapled them more bunched up to extend only about half as far across the windows as before. For curtains that hang over couches or shelves, you will have to rehem the bottoms so they hang straight across (my wife's forte).

The result still perfectly matches the original decor, but the effect is much more modern, a lighter touch, and more open feeling to the outside.

A

downside of the velour trim everywhere, though, is it REALLY absorbs cooking odors. After cooking a turkey in the oven for hours one Thanksgiving when it was cold and blustery outside, it took about a month to get rid of the smell. Now we do most smelly cooking outside, or leave the Fantastic Fan running while doing it.
