Valve Stems, Extendrs & LDTires 4 Sale April 05, 2001, 07:47:45 pm Yahoo Message Number: 3088Valve Stem Extenders, Metal Valve Stems & Tires Available.Metal Valve Stems: This is a follow-up to message # 2975: Steve at Lazy Daze provided more information on the metal valve stems they now have in stock.I asked if the metal valve stems were the type that have a nut that runs down the valve stem to seal against the wheel - and if the stems have a metal flange inside the wheel that would preclude them from being pulled out through the wheel holes. (I don't want to install metal stems without the metal flange built into their base. Reason being, the rubber base is usually what breaks after many flexes of the stem, such as caused by the weight of valve fill extenders.)Steve confirmed that his metal valve stems are ones with the built-in metal flange. He added the following description: They are very high quality using nickel plating over brass. I was assured by the distributor that they are not cheap Chinese imports. They are essentially the same length as the OEM Ford valve stems. I am also including all metal air fill caps similar to the plastic OEM ones that come on the Ford valve stems. I would recommend removing these from the bag and installing them to the front wheel valve stems, the rear wheel extension hoses, and spare tire valve stem once the valve stems and inflators have been installed. This way the tire shop cannot lose them. The set of seven valve stems with caps currently sells in the LD store for $25.00.Valve Stem Extenders: Lazy Daze also sells the braided stainless steel air fill extenders that screw onto the metal valve stems and clamp-mount on the rear wheel cover hubs. The air fill points for all four rear tires are then really easy to reach as they are located alongside the rear wheel cover hubs. The extender set kit for the four rear tires currently sells in the LD store for $42.50.Not Able to Go to Lazy Daze Store? The total cost of an order shipped from LD will include a small handling charge and UPS shipping. UPS shipping charge varies with the state being shipped to, so if you decide to order from LD, you'll need to give them a call to find out what $$ total to send along with your order.Tires Available: We have decided to change over our recently delivered LD to Michelin tires. Is anyone interested in a set of Firestone SteelTex LT225/75R16 Load Range E tires with about 1,300 miles on them?Live Long and Drive a Lazy Daze!Don McG Bellevue, WA

Valve Stems, Extendrs & LDTires 4 Sa Reply #3 – April 07, 2001, 10:23:25 pm Yahoo Message Number: 3132Hello Clarence, In reply to your questions, I decided to change to Michelin tires after printing out and reading the 200 or so pages of tire problems (about 4 to a page) reported to the NTHSA about Firestone Steeltex LT tires. Many of the reports involved were sidewall blowouts and tread separations. Of course, I recognize not all of those reports involved tires that were closely maintained. But, there were just too many failure reports for us to feel comfortable running those tires on our Lazy Daze. Also, as I mentioned in my posting, the NTHSA opened an investigation on those tires last September 20. I don't believe they would do that unless they believed the number of problem reports had reached a very unusual level. So far as I am aware, there is only one Michelin all-steel tire that is recommended for our E-450 Ford RV chassis and that is the XPS RIB model. I will use the same load range as we now have, E.It is interesting to note that no one has expressed interest on the "Life with a Lazy Daze BB" regarding purchase of our almost new set of Firestone SteelTex LT 225/75 R16 tires with 1,300 or so miles on them. I'll be asking about $60 each.Lastly, I am ordering a set of steel valve stems and Stainless steel valve stem fill extenders from Lazy Daze for installation with our new Michelins. All the Best, Don McG
Valve Stems, Extendrs & LDTires 4 Sa Reply #4 – April 08, 2001, 09:28:04 am Yahoo Message Number: 3137Don - I too researched the Firestone Steeltex Tires - mine were made in Decator - the same time/place as the "Explorer Recall" tires - you can imagine my worry ... I've had them inspected 3 times with no bad reports - every tire guy has told me that unless these are officially recalled, Firestone will resist doing anything to repair or replace them. About the time I was forgetting about the whole thing, a friend came over to my rig just last weekend and asked how I liked the tires - He is a paramedic, was driving his ambulance fast to a hospital with patient aboard and the inside rear dual delaminated - on leaving the hospital he went directly to a tire shop and had all new Michelins installed. You may have noticed the NTHSA site lists a few ambulance complaints - I suspect there are a bunch more as my friend never filed a complaint with NTHSA or Firestone. I too am considering (again) a switch to Michelins but can't seem to get past the idea of paying serious $$$ to replace barely used tires that might have a problem - obviously you were able to make the decision - Thanks for the informative post and good luck selling those tires.
