Small replacement Recliner Chairs ?

Since we have a lot of new listmembers, thought I'd ask my question again regarding replacing the free standing dinette chairs with two small RV recliners. We're looking for a traveling rig, not so much a camping rig and are very interested in the 30 ib model.
However, bad backs require a different style chair.

Has anyone on our LD list looked into the possibility of changing the chairs? Since they're free standing, I'd think size requirements would be the only consideration. Would someone who has the 30 ib model please cast their eyes on the available floor area and comment? I realize LD doesn't offer the option of recliners, but thought we might be able to purchase at a retail RV outlet.

We've learned so much from this wonderful list. A special thanks to everyone who participates and contributes.

My guess is that any recliner is going to be larger than the currently offered barrel chairs. Given that, I don't think that there is enough room for the chair. I find that there is just enough room for the barrel chairs and I certainly wouldn't want to have anything bigger, especially when the table is up.

Mel, I heard recently from LD owners who have the 26.5 rear bath who replaced their barrel chairs with 2 25" wide recliners.
They have promised me a photo when they are off the road in April. I will save this message and post the photo if/when I get the photo of the recliners. Also will ask these folks the details about the recliners.

chorst_2000,

Thank you so much for this information and for offering to post a photo, if one should become available to you. What a help this information would be. At least we now know someone has had success with a change over.

Our thanks to Glenn, too, for taking the time to post his comments about the chairs.

Mary, I have a '98 30IB and wouldn't swap my barrel chairs for anything! Given the space available, I question whether you could find recliners small enough to leave you room to get around. LD's barrels are compact and very comfortable for extended periods- although the backs aren't high enough for laid back snoozing.
The couch is really great for that!

Before assuming you want recliners, try out the barrel chairs. They tilt and swivel, as well as free-standing. There is no head support, but I frequently pull one out a bit, prop up my feet on a stool to tilt back, and lean against the wall behind - you could add a pillow.

Though LD models tend to feel fairly roomy inside, there is no wasted space and no slide-outs. Even if you fit compact recliners in there, they would clog the aisle when extended, at the least, and may not be as comfy as the native chairs.

Hello, Mel I have some experience with high back Flexteel van chairs in a "non Lazy Daze" Class C motorhome eating area. Those chairs are sold at Camping World and are meant for mounting on an existing swivel pedestal that is permanently mounted (bolted) to suitable structure in the motorhome floor. The pedestal swivel has a swivel lock-out in the straight-ahead position and about a six inch adjustable slide forward-aft. The chair has recline (with recline lock at anything from a straight-up back to the back about 45 degrees from level) and two swivel-up armrests . I found that a minimum of 70 inches of forward-aft floor space was needed for two of these van chairs and a 22 inch table between them - and - the table needed to be the "fold against the wall or remove it" type to have room for the chair swivel, recline and extending calf support to be used comfortably. The chair backs were high enough to comfortably support my 6 foot frame with my head on the chair back.
They did not have adjustable lumbar support.

Use of these chairs precluded seating more than the two of us at the table. That could be a problem for some people in itself.

We found these pedestalmounted Flexsteel van chairs very useable for "dining" with the armrests folded up, chair backs in the "up" position, the rotation locked facing toward the table and the forward-aft slide used to adjust our distance from the table. We did not even try to use the recline or swivel when the table was "up" - there was insufficient room to do so.

With the table folded away, these chairs were really comfortable for after-dinner relaxing and TV watching. We swiveled them to face the TV, reclined for comfort, used a small folding table between them to hold dessert, coffee, etc., and either of us could watch TV or read using individual and adjustable incandescent reading spotlights that hid the bulb from the "other" seat occupant.

The downside items are: I doubt if you have sufficient longitudinal space (and here 76 inches would be very comfortable) to use them. Also, they are best used on a bolted-down, floor mounted pedestal, though I suppose a box mount or pedestal mounts on a long floor plate could be made for them that did not rquire fastening to the floor. You do know how Lazy Daze feels about not fastening anything to the coach floor that isn't designed to be there, right? Don't do it!

Camping World has the following RV furniture advertised: Swivel Rocker(sets loose on floor), 32" high, 28" wide, 31" deep, 45lbs, list $287; Captain's Chair (van chair, mounts on customer's swivel/slide pedestal), 41" high, 25" wide, 19" seat depth, 56 lbs, list $249; Recliner Chair (sets loose on floor), 38" high, 31" wide, 35" deep, 120 lbs, list $529.

That all said, when we visited the LD factory, both wife and I sat in the barrel chairs and then the dinette. We selected the dinette because for us it was more comfortable and because of its additional built-in storage. I understand that most people select the barrel chairs but we would not have been comfortable in them.

Now if I could only figure out how to put heated seats in the cab .......

This is exciting!  We're hoping to be able to replace one of the barrel chairs w/ a small recliner - then we can be upright, reclined or prone in our 30' IB - due in July.
