All LD's longer than 22 feet are on a Ford chassis except for some earlier 30's. The 88 MB has a 460. Friends of ours sold an 89 MB last summer for about $25,000. High mileage, but good looking (always garaged).

"How do you find used ones that are good. There are not too many around." I live close to the factory, too. When I bought our used '85 22ft twin/king in 1996, the first one I found was in the RV Trader, had 32,000 miles, and owned by an elderly couple who had previously owned 3 Lazy Daze rigs. It was located in Pico Rivera. They took great care of it, as most LD owners do.
I knew I wouldn't find another any better. Now Greg(ld671) owns it, and helped start this club.
Keep looking...you are fortunate to live around where Lazy Daze are most plentiful...many people are flying to purchase used models. When you find one, be ready to buy...because it won't last long! The internet has really spread the word about this local family-owned company focused on quality.

I live in Seattle, Washington. Wanted a used (86-89) 22' rear lounge. None in this state that I could find. Got some leads from this list, and from the RV Trader on-line site. Most were clustered in Southern Cal. San Bernardino, Riverside, Chino, Long Beach, Temecula, San Diego, Carlsbad, La Jolla, Ocean Side. Called them all up - set up days and times to meet - got in a plane - landed in Ontario airport - rented a car and took off on my search. Saw all of them. Met some really fine people. 48 hours later - found and bought my rig. $12,000, cash. '87, bath in the street-side rear (not what I had thought I wanted at first) If I paid too much, I don't even want to know about it.

Got a tune-up and bought four new tires. Drove back up the coast (via the beautiful and white-knuckle, sometimes) Hwy 1 and 101 from San Diego, CA to Seattle, WA.
Now, no more complaints from you about having to drive for two hours to look at a coach. Have fun - this just took me about a year to get what I wanted, but I love what I got.

Sarah, was the model you got a Multiplan? If so, I would be interested in what setup it has, i.e what is in the forward and rear living areas. The Multiplan came with more layout options than any other LD model, and a neat fold-out washbasin.

Steve: You asked if the new 'pre-loved' LD I just got from So. Cal. is the Multi-plan, and you mentioned the fold out wash basin. Well, I don't know if that's what it's called, but it does have a fold out wash basin just outside the bathroom in the back. For those of you that don't know about this little thingy, it looks like a small cabinet. Actually, the lid folds up, a snap holds the lid up and you find that there's a miniature sink under there. I doubt that I'll ever use it, but the previous owner said they did. I just use the kitchen sink to wash my hands - brush my teeth. I use this little 'secret sink' to stash some bathroom stuff like my hair dryer.

Now I have a question. I saw a post earlier that indicated the 350 Ford Engine was only good for 50-60,000 miles. Choke! Is that true? Mine is about 55,000 miles right now. Wow. What's the scoop on that? Thanks in advance, Sarah and Miz Daisy in Seattle.

Sarah, this is a Multiplan you have, and it was available on either the Chevy platform - with the 350 engine, or Ford. I am pretty sure if you have the Ford, the engine would be the 460 cid. In any event, there are plenty of either of these still on the road with no major repairs, and a fair smattering that have experienced serious problems. However, the lifetime of an engine is defined as when the block needs to be rebuilt, and this should not be common with either platform below 100,000 to 150,000 miles. The 'serious problems' with either would result from improper maintenance or driving techniques, and this is certainly a variable when you buy used.

Ours is an '83 on the Chevy platform, and had two cracked cylinder heads when we bought it. This is a special circumstance that applies to older models that require leaded gasoline, regardless of engine size. When used today with unleaded gas, there is no combination of additives that will save the valvetrain of the engine from premature failure. Replacing the heads, or rebuilding them if not cracked/warped, will allow the use of unleaded-compatible components.
If your model is new enough to have a catalytic conveter, you can be certain this issue is not one you need to worry about.

Back to a more pleasant topic, you didn't say much about your layout. The Multiplan had two seating areas, each available with a choice of chairs, couch, or dinette. In addition, the rear area had a permanent bed as an option. So what all does yours have?

See my previous reply to Sarah. In '82 the motor was designed for leaded gas. Find out if the owner has had a valve job, and if hardened valve seats and high-temperature valves were used. If not, budget in about $2000 to $3000 for this work eventually.
