Satelite Dish & Computers March 12, 2001, 06:23:59 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2593I am a novice here when I ask "If you get the LD satelite dish, can you use this to access the internet?" (i.e. has anyone asked LD if this is possible?) Question 2: " For those of you who have the satelite dish, would you share your assessment of its worth in terms of your TV watching enjoyment?"Is it worth the extra option and expense vs. just the regular antenna? Thanks, folks.Regards, Straf14
Satelite Dish & Computers Reply #1 – March 12, 2001, 08:15:12 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2595I now have a S at. dish at home and a portable one to use in the RV. You must sign up with DIRECTV.at any TV store. You will then get a receiver with an access card. You can use the receiver @ home and in the RV. We cancelled our cable service and use the Sat. exclusively. The Sat. can be used anywhere. Call DIRECTV @ 1 800 531 5000. We just ordered a 26 1/2 RK with the LD Sat. dish, but I plan on taking the portable one along so I can use it if I am parked out of line of sight with the satillite. I have a 75 ft. cable for the remote dish. We enjoy this setup very much. Hope you will too. JIM
Satelite Dish & Computers Reply #2 – March 12, 2001, 10:29:35 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2597Thanks, Jim for the reply. I understood your reply as pertaining to the TV. How about computer access? Can you access the internet via the satelite dish? If so, what is the internet server? And fees? Thanks again.Straf14

Satelite Dish & Computers Reply #4 – March 13, 2001, 01:14:29 am Yahoo Message Number: 2599For TV, I think you should also look at DishTV. I don't have either but I've been doing a lot of reading on it and there are many, many complaints about the way DirectTV treats RVers. What I have read is that unless you primarily want the sat for viewing sports, DishTV is a better deal and a better company. YMMVAs far as internet via sat goes, it is still not ready for prime time. There are several groups who have a system 'available soon' but only one I know of that is currently offering 2-way internet access and that is Starband. They do not support RV's yet. There are also several companies that offer 1-way internet via sat (you need a phone connection for the uplink) but how well that works over a cell phone is hotly debated. My opinion is that it is still the bleeding edge and other options (cell modem (slow), libraries, etc) are still the better choice.

The cover article is devoted to cable vs DSL vs satellite as in warp speed web access. Their coverage of the topic is quite comprehensive.Regards, alibrarian
