LD 30 ft - weight limit ?
Yahoo Message Number: 29
We're considering the LD 30' model. I notice the "Left over, usable weight", after all is taken into consideration, leaves only about 640 lbs for personal items and supplies. That seems a very low amount of weight, when you consider the weight of personal items and supplies for two people.

Does anyone have experience with this model and have you ever felt, or confirmed being over weight when loaded for a trip?

Thanks for your advice and for the use of this forum.

Hi MEL, What are you basing your figures on and what year are you looking at? Are these brochure figures? I'm looking in the RV Rating Book and the 1999 30' shows a net payload of 1503 lbs. Probably not enough if your going to live in it fulltime, but okay for weekend/vacation use. If you need more carrying capacity, you may want to consider the 26.5' model. The 1999 has a net payload of around 2,550.

Buying a motor home, like buying a home, is a tradeoff.
Unless your filthy rich and can afford a top of the line deisel pusher, you need to make decisions on what features are the most important to you. You may want to contact Lazy Daze and verify any figures you have, or perhaps you already have? Let us know what you find out!

Greg

PS: I only use my rig for weekends and short trips, so have not had a problem with being overloaded.

Hi Greg,

I'm quoting the figures from the LD brochure they sent out to me about 6 months ago.

We're not going to use full time, just for extended travel after retirement.

Thanks for your input.

My wife and I just ordered a 30ft Lazy Daze. Here are my calculations based on the LD specs.

With just the two of us, and full water, gasoline and propane, I figure we have just under 1000 lbs available for supplies, tools, etc. That's a bit on the light side; but should be doable.

Dry weight (no liquids, passengers, supplies)   11790 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)   14050 Loaded with full gas, water, passengers @150   13276 Left over payload   774

gal   lb/gal   weight lbs Gas         55   5.6   308 Fresh water   60   8.4   504 Water heater   6   8.3   49.8 Propane      17   4.24   72.08 Total weight of liquids         933.88

Dry weight            11790 Total weight of liquids   934 Curb weight         12724 Payload            1326   9.44% Number of passengers      2 Weight of passengers      330

Loaded weight with liquids & passengers   13054 Available weight for supplies   996 Vacationing available wt needed   1000   1500

Because of the myriad "rules" concerning proper RV weights, I have applied two simple rules for the past 5 coaches we've had: [1] FULLY loaded, always run 500 # under your GVW. [2] if you need a roof pod, you're lugging too much junk around. Sound impossible? Not at all.
Take a close scrutiny of the unnecessary junk lotsa folks carry. Now, when on vacation or full-timing, if you need the 2 sets of golf clubs, full scuba gear, your fully dressed Harley on the back bumper, fishing boat on the roof and tow a SUV, well, partner, you're in the right business but using the wrong mode of transportation. You need an 18-wheeler. The trick to RV'ng, is CONSOLIDATION. We seem to think that we can have ALL the amenities of our back-home-digs. And we can, almost. How much can goods do you store? Is the frige/freezer jammed to the hilt? Do you have bags & bags of extra food items stored under the dinette or where ever? Why? This is the year 2007, and unless you're doing a stretch in the Gobi desert, markets are readily available for restocking. Are those big, fancy lounge chairs, tables, silly awning lights, 200 stuffed animals cluttering the dash really necessary? You just gotta have that portable Dish to fool with and store in the shower bevcause you can't live without Monday Night Football. People, especially the ladies, are tuned to need at least 1 fresh outfit a day. Well, this is a tough one for most, but with a little nudging, she'll realize that no one cares that she wore the same outfit 2 days ago. We Americans are attuned to full and instant gratification. It really shouldn't apply to RV'ng.

Dick and MEL: Good info on the weights! I didn't think to calculate the weight of the six gallons of water in the water heater. Glad you caught that! 996 lbs. of net payload for supplies would be sufficient for me, but your mileage may vary! Monitor the weight of the supplies carefully and distribute it evenly.
When you are done loading, take the rig to a scale to verify the calculations. In addition to the GVWR, ensure you do not exceed the limit for the individual tires and the axles. When I weighed my rig it took six measurements to figure it out. FYI, the RV Consumer Group recommends a 5% buffer for safety.

MEL, if you need more payload you may want to consider the shorter model.

Thank you for taking the time to post these figures. I caught a message somewhere that said the LD company figures allow for/include 400 lbs. of supplies before they state the amount left over to be used for personal items/supplies. We haven't yet visited their factory so I don't know if this is correct.

We are planning on towing a small auto, four down? We want to do that as we will be using the LD for extended travel.
Stop/Park and sightsee within a given area, then move on.
Did you hear anything negative about towing a small car with a Lazy Daze?

Looking at their website, it looks like they're now offering an installed auto satelite system for TV reception? Were you able to see this option installed on one of the display models? I'd rather LD handle the installation, if possible.

We're also thinking of replacing the barrel chairs with small MH recliners. The LD chairs appear to be free standing so, if space permits, it seems an easy change out. Thinking the bad back can't handle the little barrel chairs. I wish LD offered an option to replace with small recliners.

Were you able to test drive the 30 ft? If so, does it handle well?

Will you consider coming back and giving us a review of your new MH after you take delivery?

Congratulations on your purchase. MEL

You need to do the calculation using the LD figures (they are on the website). I posted our numbers based on the two of us, full fuel, water, & LP. Your weights will be different for different models and number/weight of passengers.

DO plan to visit the factory. Their showroom is very impressive and the people are very helpful and will answer your questions. We went on a Saturday when the factory wasn't operating, so we didn't get to see the manufacturing process.

I did test drive the 30 ft from their showroom. It was quite easy to drive and seemed quite stable. We ordered the Bilstein shocks to improve handling a bit more. The person who went with us on the drive encouraged me to do a U turn and some other things which showed that it was nothing to fear.

Instead of the barrel chairs, we ordered the dual slide-out dinette. That wasn't in the model we saw; but you can see similar dinetttes in other models and they are available on the 30 ft LD. I didn't like the barrel chairs.
The dinette can stay in place with seating for two people and the seats can slide out (clever!!) to add seating for four people.

We won't get delivery until November as the factory capacity is limited and Ford is having a hard time meeting demand. After we take delivery, I'll post a review. I expect to be very happy based on the things I've read from other LD owners.
