V10 stalling when stopping for left turn
Yahoo Message Number: 24712
We're having an intermittent problem on our '99 LD.  When coming to a stop to make a left turn, occasionally the engine will stall.  It starts right back up, doesn't seem to be related to the quantity of fuel in the tank or how long the engine's been running.  Happens maybe once a trip.

Any thoughts?  The one Ford service advisor we mentioned it do (who also has a class C) said his does the same thing and he didn't have any ideas.

Thanks,

Michelle

If you search the web, Ford has couple famous well known problems.
For example, Fuel pump overheat and ABS light.

Michelle, First thing that comes to mind is to change the gas filter and air filter, which wouldn't hurt anyway, and if that doesn't solve it, then are you at high altitude? Mari

Michelle, This is not the kind of problem that is fixed by randomly replacing parts and pieces that seem to be likely culprits. It's a waste of money.
I can't speak with authority about the V-10, but all the fuel injected engines I am familiar with have a idle speed control device. On the older Ford engines they require periodic cleaning or you get engine idle problems such as you are having. I would suggest a Ford Truck service center. Talk with them.

Done and done ;-)  We did that at the beginning of this season (the stalling has plagued us for 2 years now).  We haven't run at high altitude at all. We're suspecting a vacuum leak or maybe a low idle but were wondering if anyone else had seen the same problem.

Do you mean idle control motor, O2 sensor, or TPS (throttle position sensor)?  My thought was the ICM, but usually that's a catastrophic failure where you can't mainta

None of the above. On the older V8s it is called the "Idle Speed Air Bypass Valve". The V-10 may have the same thing, but I can't say for sure. It would be located on top of the engine in the valley between the valve covers. When you lift your foot off the accelerator the throttle plate closes. The bypass valve then opens to allow air to bypass the throttle plate and keep the engine running. When the valve gets sludged up it gets sticky and you start getting intermittant engine die off.

I'd try the local Ford dealer and see if they will talk about it.

Tom.

Bill, what turned out to be the problem that caused the engine light to come on? Mari

Thanks!  I hadn't even thought of this!

A Ford tech on rv.net forums suggested carbon buildup on the ICM, user-cleanable if you're a decent mechanic (which Steve is, among many other things!)  We'll see how easy it is to get to ourselves but will definitely keep

Maybe this is a stupid question but why is it always a left turn ? Is it only when you singnal to turn left have you already turned the wheel and the M/h has shifted a little to the left ? Just wondering...

Yes They are... Was just wondering oif it 1 had something to do with the movement of the m/h towards the left or if maybe the signal itself....
I know that signals arent usually the cause of a problem but one never knows....

I have not had this problem on our 2000 V10.  But I did have the same problem on a 1991 Chrysler 360, on our Aerocruiser.  It was corrected by correcting the idle speed.  (However, for some reason, it was worse when the ambient temp. was very high.) Bobbi
