Thieves in the Night July 16, 2003, 12:44:48 am Yahoo Message Number: 24573Sarah, I was just getting ready to write and tell you how much I envy your being in the cool Northwest, and then I see your car was stolen. Major emotional bummer, not to mention the practical headaches. Those insurance companies are tricky, aren't they? They seem to find a way to get around paying, especially if you tell them the truth.Last December Chris's Honda 70 motorcycle was stolen from us. We have a fully fenced and locked back yard, which is where the bike was - in the covered motorcylce trailer. Some creeps got it out and lifted it over the fence. Our end-to-end auto insurance didn't cover it because the trailer was not hitched to our tow vehicle (truck) when it was stolen. So much for being honest in the claim.May all thieves wake up with their shoe strings tied together, and lots of other terrible stuff!I sympathize, and empathize too Sarah. I know however, that you will prevail. Good always wins out over evil!Linda
Re: Thieves in the Night-"or even in the day time" Reply #1 – July 16, 2003, 11:21:05 am Yahoo Message Number: 24586Your message reminded me to to say that while we were in San Miguel de Alliende, Mexico last February, two men posing to be RV washers broke into a motorhome while the owners were in town touring the historical area. The owners left a window open so that cool air could come in while they were out. They lost everything of value in their rig. This all happened in broad daylight while many of us sat in our chairs in the shade outside across from that errant motorhome. These wash guys couldn't wash any rig at all since they had no water in the bucket they were carrying but they did fool all of us sitting out there. This didn't happen because we were traveling in Mexico; we find Mexico just as safe to travel in as the USA. It happened because the motorhome was not properly secured. The window should have been shut at the very least. A Lazy Daze window can be shut and secured using the plastic locks on them however those locks can be easily broken by a thief. Our solution to this situation was to purchase wooden dowels the length of the sliding distance of each window, paint each flat black and lay them in the slide area of all of our windows. The black paint causes them to be almost invisible unless you look right at them. We are certainly not paranoid but do secure our Lazy Daze as best we can when traveling anywhere. By the way our Lazy Daze is the perfect rig for traveling down the sometimes narrow highways in Mexico. I am sorry that I chose to use this thread but it just reminded me to discuss this with all of you. If you are interested in Mexico travel let us know.
Re: RV travel to Mexico - hope to someday Reply #2 – July 16, 2003, 12:15:51 pm Yahoo Message Number: 24589Kent and Margaret,Thanks for relating your experience and suggestion to use dowels to prevent forced entry into an RV window. I suppose one could cut a slightly shorter dowel to allow some ventilation but keep a person from entering. You asked who was interested in Mexico travel by RV. You can put me in the category of one of the ones dreaming about it (armchair and computer screen dreamer). Maybe our first trip to Mexico by RV will be the Escapee's Chapter 8 rally in the copper canyon area in 2004. Hope to take the train ride as a passenger (not by RV on a flat bed railroad car).An nice website with pictures of Mexican RV "campgrounds" is:http://www.ontheroadin.comThis also has a story of a somewhat more subtle theft at a Mexican campground. Also have the Church's book on Mexico RV camping. They say that fear is what keeps many RVers from enjoying Mexico.Best Wishes,Ken, Patty and little Stephanie in San Diego

We are members of Escapees Chapter 8 "The Mexican Connection"; in fact we are currently the chapter co- historians. We went to Mexico City for the last chapter rally. There were almost 100 rigs attending. We will probably meet you at the Copper Canyon rally next winter. You and other interested people are welcome to visit our travel site if you wish at http://groups.msn.com/KentandMargaretNeveu and feel free to join the group also if you wish. Terri and Mike Church are Chapter 8 members and were at our Mexico City rally. We also camped with them in San Miguel de Alliende where the break-in I referred to happened. They are delightful people.Kent and Margaret Neveu
