I just returned from a trip to California and encountered some very strong cross winds on both legs of the journey. While we were out there, we visited Chuck the Tire Man and had him install a set of extended valve stems on our rig. Before he did the installation, he showed me several tires that had failed due to overheating and tread separation. He is a strong advocate for Goodyear all steel tires on motorhomes as many of you already know. He showed me the characteristics of an all steel tire versus the ones with the polyester belts. It was obvious that the Goodyears are built for heavy duty use. However, I still have the Michelin LTXs that came on the RV.
As I was leaving, I asked about tire pressures. His reply was that I should run 75 lbs in the front (80 if I could stand it) and 80 lbs in the rear of my 24' FD because the tires would run cooler and the rig would track better with stiffer sidewalls. I have to say that I was sceptical, but we ran with those pressures on our way home and the winds were fierce, but we both felt that the rig handled better. I forgot my IR thermometer, so I couldn't check tire temps when we stopped, but they always felt cool to the touch.
On the trip out to California, we ran 60 lbs front and 65 lbs rear based on the chart in the owner's manual and our weight per the local truck scales. We also have a Steer Safe, but that was on before we changed the pressures. Any change in ride harshness was hard to gauge since the roads were terrible. I'm not sharing this information to convince anyone to do anything differently. I just thought it was interesting to hear Chuck's point of view as a tire professional for 40+ years. If I can clarify any details for anyone, please let me know.

I am in Anchorage now and the choice of tires is slim.  I have been to a local chain called Johnson Tires and also visited Sams.  I am not a member of Costco and will try them and rejoin if needbe.  No store yet as had the Michelins that the coach came with.  Neither have they had any tires with steel belts on the sidewalls.
Johnson Tire's best choice is a Dean Wildcat which I have never heard of.
Sam's has the Goodyear Duratrac at $188 each.  Has anyone used that tire? Any recommendations?
My original tires are now 5 years old and are "okay".  I expect to finish them on the Denali highway next week and will then be ready to purchase new ones.  Maybe my timing was bad but I have already covered 7000 miles since leaving the LD factory on Mar 31.  Great trip and still have to see another LD!

You might call Diversified Tire up in Wasilla.  907-376-2700. I have had good luck with them, not sure if they carry michelins though. Have fun on the Denali highway, beautiful country up there.

Try Phelp's Tires on Commercial Dr, near Merril Field. I was there last week, the tires are in stock.  Quote for all 6 for me was $1655 out the door.
