Verizon Express, long

Barry, Kathi, et al: thanks for bringing info from the computer/cell phone e-list over to this e-group. I use the cell phone nearly all the time for connecting to the internet, and just don't have enough speed or space to sign up for that additional volume.
I did go to Verizon yesterday and got the Express Network, thanks to your posts, and the fact that I had Kathi's cell phone number. The customer service guy, who was wonderful at pursuing the issue for me, at first couldn't find it at all, then when he did, it showed that I couldn't get it.
He thought that it might be because my phone (Motorola StarTac) couldn't go that fast - he says the max speed for my phone is 14.4bps. I'd be a really happy camper if I could get that speed. More on that, later.
Then he thought it might be my plan - I have America's Choice. When he looked up Kathi's plan, he said she and I had exactly the same, so he kept pursuing it.

Long story short, I got it. Now for the result - no change.
When I first got the KOC card, it worked in Digital mode - speed was pretty good. I could even tolerate doing a bit of web surfing.
Then after 1-2 months, it just refused to work in Digital, no matter where I was (LA, SF, Phoenix, etc) It switches to Analog.
Hours on the phone with Verizon, Oziteck and Earthlink tech support people.
Everyone has really tried to help.

Setup: StarTac tri-mode, dual band - the phone has been replaced twice, on the chance that the phone was the problem.
Ozitec's KOC card, also recently replaced - same reason.
It still flips to Analog, and I'm in Seattle. Blazing along at 2,400 bps.
When I get all the 'stuff' for my new iBook, I'll be switching to Mobile Office. In the meantime, I'll still be using my old PowerBook and the KOC card.

Adding the express Network hasn't made a change for me.

Ideas? TIA, Sarah

We have been using Verizon Mobile Office with the Venturi compression software for over a year now and are very happy with it. The only problem we have ever had was when the Venturi software was upgraded and caught Verizon more or less by surprise. I worked with the Verizon techs and came up with a temporary fix until Verizon was able to fix their software properly. Otherwise, it has worked extremely well except those times when we have only an analog connection. We just save our e-mails and pictures for upload when we get to a digital connection. We are retired so we have no time requirements of when we must do this thing or that one; so we get online using Verizon when we can. Also, when in an analog area, we just go to a library or when in Mexico we go to an internet cafe to check e-mail (hotmail account). We try to keep things as simple as we can when we are traveling. We travel into Mexico in the winter and hope to travel the west coast this winter for about two months. To view the many pictures we have uploaded using Verizon Mobile Office go to http://groups.msn.com/KentandMargaretNeveu to see our last fall/winter's trip. We would appreciate any comments any of you might have on our site. If there are any questions about the Escapees Mexican Connection Chapter ask those as well; we are co-historians for the chapter.

Sarah,
I'm kind of out of my element here, but I think you need an Express Network capable phone to use Express Network. I don't think your phone is. When connecting to that network, the phone is, in a sense, the modem and the Ositech card would not be used. I believe you hook up your EN capable phone to your computer with the proper cable, get it set up and then dial 777 and the phone connects your computer to the interet via Express Network.
As to why your Ositech card no longer connects in digital mode, my only suggestion would be to check your cell phone to be sure it is showing a digital signal wherever you are. You also might check here
 http://www.ositech.com/Products/koc.htm#SupportedPhones

to be absolutely sure that the Startac you're currently using allows you to take advantage of the digital features of the KOC card. Some Startacs don't.
Failing that, you might find a high speed connection and do some searching of Ositech + Macintosh + Powerbook to see if there are some clues out there.

Sarah,

It is correct that the StarTac is not Express Network compatable.
It should work fine with Quick to Net at 14k however as long as you are

Barry, is Quick to Net the same as Mobile Office? I'm buying that from eBay, and a serial to USB cable that I need for the Mac.
More questions later about changing phones, but will keep this email simple.

Thx - Sarah

Sarah,
Yes, Quick-to Net, Q2N, and Mobile Office are all the same (although Mobile Office can also set up Express Network or EN).

Sarah,

Sorry it is not working for you YET.  It must be that MAC that is causing all the problems.   :-D   ;-)    Am sure it will all work out.
As a personal note, the estate people are coming tomorrow (Monday AM ) to start working on getting my stuff ready for the sale next weekend.
Then one more week to work on getting the house ready and it will go on the market for sale.  I have worked so hard going through the house trying to find what I want to keep and have only touch 50% of what I have.  Ready to walk out and not keep anything more.   One thing though, emotionally it is not as hard as I thought it would be.  Physically though, I am beat.  Talk with you later.
