Progressive insurance update & finish first comments & a nifty step
Yahoo Message Number: 23779
After hearing about substantially lower premiums others were paying for their Progressive RV insurance I did some digging.  I found that Progressive had a substantial rate decrease this past May.  Of course I purchased my insurance in March.  I went to my local agent and had them requote my policy with the same coverage and it went from $903 to $655.  We were all amazed!  The only way to take advantage of the new rate was to cancel my old policy and write a new one.  A small price to pay to save almost $250.

After listening to all the banter about Finish First, I ordered some.  It took my wife and I about 4 hours to polish our 26.5 LD.  A few days later I added a second coat to the front and all the grey and silver areas.  We are heading up to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in a week and will be travelling for about 3 months.  The eastern bugs should give the Finish First a real test, especially the killer mosquitos.  I'll give a report back in about 3 months and let everyone know what I think of this stuff.  If the "slick" feeling of the coach exterior is any indication, nothing is going to stick to this stuff!
As a slight aside, I ordered a step that mounts to the front tire to make reaching the area of the overhang easier.  With the step I can reach past the midpoint of the windshield up into the tight area where it meets the overhang.  I couldn't even come close to doing that with a step ladder, which by the way is only rated for 150 lbs.
What average American male weighs under 150 lbs?  The step is rated at 500 lbs.  Its made of hefty steel.  I purchased it from Harbor Freight in CA for around $20-25, since Camping World no longer carries the step.  Now I can clean the front even when I'm on the road!

I also put two coats of Finish First on my front cab portion of my LD a couple of weeks ago.  I just got back from a 1000 mile trip and almost all of the bugs washed off the coach with just water and a brush. No soap.  I used a little Finish Fast on the few remaining spots and they easily came off.

Beth, I'm not Dan, but after he posted that message I went and looked it up myself.  Here's the web address for the step.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32044

If Yahoo breaks that up as it usually does, you can just goto  www.harborfreight.com    and search on item number 32044.

Hope this helps,

Charles.

Harbor Freight has two types of step.  I don't know which one Dan has.  One is at the address that Charles gave.  The other is at
 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42020

Item 42020 is rated at 500 lbs.  Item 32044 doesn't show a weight rating but says it folds.
Last night Ken ordered both so we will compare and return the one we like least.  He also ordered from them a torque wrench that goes to 150 ft-lbs.  The new LD requires 140 ft-lbs on the lug nuts.

Enter "wheel step" in Google and you'll get some other options, in particular versions of this concept that adjust to three different heights and don't look quite so cumbersome in terms of storage. More $ though.

Dan - about how much does the step weigh, and does it fold flat?

Sarah, here's the website.  It doesn't list the weight; it does fold up; it costs $19.99 (+shipping, I'm sure).  Says it fits wheels (tires) 14" to 24 1/2"; platform size is 20" x 9"; has 3 vertical adjustments at 4" intervals.

Chris - thanks for the URL. That looks pretty good, and doesn't look like it would take up much space. I really have a hard time reaching up under Mz. Daisy's chin to get her all cleaned up. 5'4" and reaching!!

There are some alternative versions of the wheel/tire step, such as this on= e:
 http://www.a1-autoracks.com/sproof2.html

About twice the money but looks to me like a superior design. Most importan= tly, the step adjusts to three different heights. Search for "wheel step" on Google = and you'll get other sites as well.

Chris, this does look like a good one. Anne's idea sounds good -
shoot.

Now I have to make a choice. Don't you sometimes just want someone to say 'get this thing' and that's all there is to it?

Sarah, the $20 one looked good (but guess it isn't); this one also does even if it's a bit more.  I use the small two step stool here at home when washing/waxing and will probably continue with it on the road now that I have looked at the others.

Well, it looks like the small 2-3 step ladder is going to win. Thanks to all for helping me make this complicated decision. Well, it's all relative, isn't it? Not too many tough decisions to make these days.

Sara,

Have you thought about getting the better wheel step with the three adjustable heights and one of these:
 http://www.campingworld.com/browse/products/index.cfm? deptID=1&subOf=143,3&prodID=2922

It's a step ladder that folds and collapses to about 3" by 3" by whatever length you order. The five foot model should fit in the outside storage compartment under the passenger side sofa on your new Rear Bath. You could use the wheel step for quick window washing and the step ladder when you need to access higher parts of the coach, such as for waxing. If you're over 5' tall, you should be able to reach the top of the coach from a 5' step ladder.

You have not mentioned your "meditation" session. I would be most interested in learning what you gained from the period of silence if it's something you feel like sharing.
