Newbie rides again! Water pumps...
Yahoo Message Number: 23411
Okay, so I have put in three sixteen hour days on the 78' LD 22.5 and most of the systems are running well now.  However I may have a water pump problem.  Pump runs but doesn't appear to be pumping anything.  There is water from the tank at the intake.
And "city water" works fine.  If I was guessing I'd say there a pump diaphram problem...but since I know little about this it could be as simple as priming or pressure.  Any clues?

Thanks

Ben  (who hopes to take a 800 round trip test drive to Neveda next week.)

Ben,
I don't know if this will help or not but I have run into this problem three times so far.  The first time it happened was after I "practiced" blowing out the water lines (east coast owner) - tank and lines were empty.  Filled the tank and fired up the pump - no water.  I too thought it was a priming problem.  City water worked fine.  Per the owners manual it mentioned "air in the lines".  I also had water at the intake side of the pump.  I telephoned the mother ship and they informed me "must still have air in the lines".  I found this hard to believe but.  Finally, with no apparent work on my end the pump started working.

The same thing happened this spring when I defrosted the LD.  I thought it must be air - again.  This time was worse.  The pump would not work for several days.  I went to the Shurflo website and their owner's manual said the same as mine.  Telephoned Shurflo and they informed me the pump was "self priming".  After making a trip with some water in the tank and using city water at the park we were at, the pump started working.  If it truly was air, it took quite some time to remove itself - air pocket somewhere I suppose.

Hope this helps.  I have yet to figure out if the pump is going bad or is just hard to get primed.  If you find out the answer I would sure like to know - I too thought I would have to purchase a new pump, but I didn't.

Thanks,

Greg

You may have a stuck or defective check valve in the pump. It is difficult or impossible to take the pump head apart so replacement of the pump or the pump head may be needed. Pump heads rebuild kit are available for some pumps from RV stores, yours may be obsolete due to its age.
If a pump is needed, I would replace it with a Whisper King pump, a much quieter pump.
If you remove the pump, try forcing water into the inlet port, using a garden hose. You may get lucky and blow the check valve clean, a long shot but worth the effort.
