Traveling to Alaska with toad

I will be traveling to Alaska with my 2002 LD and towing a 1997 Tracker(as my toad)  I have a full front cover for my Ford and a Rock Solid rubber rear guard.  HOWEVER, I have been told I need a front vinyl cover or other protection for the toad to prevent it from being badly dinged up by flying rocks or gravel as other rigs pass me.  I cannot seem to find anyplace that sells this type of cover.  I have seen pictures of toads with wire mesh or plastic or plywood attached to the tow bar in front of the toad.  Again, I cannot find a place that sells them.

Do I need further protection from gravel for the toad?  If so, can anyone PLEASE direct me to a seller of such protection.  I live in Palm Desert, California.

Thanks very much for your help MikeP.

Mike, I did the "Great American RV Adventure" with my '98 30' towing a '99 Saturn last summer.  Like you, I had full rear flap and a Tow Car Cover (from Coast Covers) on the car- covered the entire front and up the windshield.  The damage I suffered  to the car was from stones the coach had thrown up, hitting the lower fascia where the cover wasn't.
As far as wire, mesh, etc., you will see all sorts of DIY stuff- most of which looks real bad.  Some even look like they might offer some protection.  My best advice to you is this- go on the trip, take it easy and drive real slow in the construction zones, stay as far right as you can to leave plenty of room for trucks and locals as you drive carefully, expect a few dings, and have fun!  I'm ready to do it again!

I don't know this first hand but I've read on other forums that "under skirt" type protector is the best way to go.  These reports came from people that had also traveled
