Campgrounds January 31, 2001, 12:48:59 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1811Dear Clubmembers,Hopefully in June I will be making the trip to LD to pick up my new 30' IB. We will be driving it back to South Bend, IN. I guess 2400 miles should do the trick to break it in!We plan on an extended trip to Northern CA down the coast to San Diego for a few days, then thru NV, AZ, and back to South Bend in early Sept. Can anyone recommend Campgrounds that shouldn't be missed. We will not be on a set schedule, and may stay for several days in one location or another.Thank You, Andy & Charlotte Karafa
Campgrounds Reply #1 – January 31, 2001, 06:36:52 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1817Andy, I understand, unless you are willing to pay California sales tax(8%?),you must take possession of the LD either in Nevada or Arizona and you cannot reenter California for 90 days. Being from Texas with a 6 1/4% sales tax, it's enough of a difference to pay an ICC driver and go to the border. Our regret is we will not be able to see California on this trip. Don't know what Indiana's sales tax is. Can someone confirm California's sales tax and my understanding above?Straf14
Campgrounds Reply #2 – January 31, 2001, 06:49:09 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1818You have the out-of-state delivery legal situation correct.I wonder, however, if one would get burned at the Agricultural Inspection Stations that California has erected along its borders. In particular, I wonder if you could bring your own-state license plates with you. Put them on in Nevada and drive back into California.I think that the plate transfer will work for us. Michigan hands you the plates and registers the coach with only the bill of sale and an insurance coverage certificate. We'll try it!I'll bet the California touroid industry would hate to know that folks can be sent packing just because they pay taxes in another state.bob phillips Ex Californian
Campgrounds Reply #3 – January 31, 2001, 09:00:46 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1819Andy! When we picked up our LD 1n Feb. 1998 we were informed by the factory that you must have a driver, drive the coach to either NV or AZ border to avoid CA tax. However if you pay CA. tax you could stay as long as you want. Now to your question. About halfway way between L.A. and San Diago is Doheny Beach Park that is really nice. Then near San Diago is Santee Lakes County Park. If you choose to take delivery of you LD at Ehrenburg AZ (at the border). There is a real nice K.O.A right on the river. Just about every park we stayed at in CA. is nice. Sorry for the extended post. Oscar Garies

When we get notice from LD of a delivery date, expected in late March, we will pay for the coach prior to delivery so we will have a bill of sale from LD, notify the insurance agent here to get the insurance certificate, buy Michigan plates which requires that you pay the 6% Michigan sales tax at that time, fly out to the factory to get checked out on the coach, do the California to Nevada ICC run, and then stick those Michigan plates on and go wherever we please in the U.S.A., including California, if we're so inclined.I just find it hard to comprehend that they really have a law that prohibits one from re-entering the state for 90 days. Doesn't make sense but then California law makers dreamt up their present energy policy which seems to have a few serious flaws.Regards.Pat Nowak

Campgrounds Reply #6 – February 01, 2001, 08:09:35 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1827Bob: I called the Michigan Secretary of State's office here in Holland and asked if I can get my Mich. plates ahead of time. The lady there said she saw no problem doing that if I could provide a proof of insurance certificate and they would like to see a Certificate of Origin that the manufacturer could provide.I plan to call the Sec. of State back and see if a Bill of Sale will do as well in case LD doesn't want to do the Certificate of Origin deal, although I have no reason to think that they wouldn't and I know they would provide a bill of sale if we paid for it ahead of time. All LD is worrying about is being an innocent participant in some scheme to avoid paying state sales tax and I can't blame them as I'm sure people have been trying to pull off such deals for as long as they have been in business. The State of Mich is going to get their sales tax money up front so they will be happy.Regards.Pat Nowak
Campgrounds Reply #7 – February 01, 2001, 10:51:55 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1828I also contacted our Beaumont tax office and found out with the required documentation i.e. the MCO, proof of insurance, RV's weight, I could register the LD in Texas, get the tags and take to California. Our Texas sales tax is 6.25%; if California's is 8.25% and we're talking a $65,000 purchase price, the delta is $1,300. I have read $300 to pay the ICC driver. That's not chump change in my book.Straf14

And I definately would not let a stranger drive my new LD for the first 1,000 miles.
Campgrounds Reply #9 – February 03, 2001, 01:31:37 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1851With the 7.5% sales tax and the $335 ICC fee, you make a good point. Less than $500 coupled with our interest in touring your great state, especially the wine country, is worth considering. Thanks rblanc, for the brain jostle.Regards, Straf14
