I'm following the discussion on oil and I have a question, as usual  :-). We're taking our '89 22ft 350 fuel injected engine in for servicing next week. Ladybug has 7?,000 miles on her and has only used synthetic oil. What weight should we use, considering that we'll be going from Florida to the mountains in AZ and Co. and possibly back to visit my brother, 20 miles from Death Valley? Did someone say "tooling around in Death Valley pulling a toad in the summer"? Seriously, we'll be in extreme heat, high altitude and probably some cold nights in the mountains.

Karen,
The lengthy post to Jonna will answer some questions for you I think.
Otherwise just use the grade that is specified in your manual. If it says 10w-30 use that. You could use a lower weight before the W if you wish for cold start-up protection but if the manual says 10w-30 that is sufficient. Use the grade the mfg specifies.

Karen, Someone else with that year chassis will have to let you know then or you could call the chassis mfg or a dealer. You may be able to get one or a shop manual for it. My geuss would be 10w-30 based on the year but it could be 5w-30 and that would be fine even if the manual says 10w-30.

Sounds like a nice trip your going on!

Not sure this is much help, because I have 460 ford instead of 350 chevy, and use regular instead of synthetic, but for the 1989 460 the recommended oil is 10w30
