Mileage adjustment on used LD

As a "still searching for the right used LD" person, perhaps some of you seasoned (and I might add - lucky!) LD owners out there might want to help educate me on how to adjust for mileage. I see what NADA says, but.... it seems like LD live in an aura all their own. What is a true mileage factor chart?

If NADA is correct the rig with 96,900 miles should have a whopping 27% of its price shaved off! No wonder it was such a big secret! How much should really be taken off the price is my BIG QUESTION.

Linda,

The NADA book might help a little in trying figure out how much to deduct for mileage.  It's a hard thing to really quantify.  What I discovered as I was looking for mine, was that the more I looked, the better I got at estimating a good deal or what to expect for a given year/configuration.  What also helped was calling and talking to lots of sellers.  I was able to get a better idea of what kind of condition warranted the price.  I called on LD's that I wasn't really interested in, but the education was time well spent.  You also get a feel for how this person maintained there coach.  You can tell a lot about a person from a 15 minute talk.  There is also a lot of info that can not be relayed over an ad and talking to the seller can really make an ordinary coach become the one you got to have or the one to stay away from.
Another way of looking at things, is the various milestones the chassis goes through.  Let's say you have 2 exact LD's, one has 57k miles and the other, 62k miles, same asking price.  At first glance, you may think the lower mileage one is the better deal.  But in reality, the higher mileage one might be the better deal.  You see at 60k miles, there tends to be lots of service items that need to be preformed, and if the seller was taking care of there coach, this service would have been done.  Whereas the other would need it done in 3k miles, on your expense.  Normally, there is major service done at every 30k mile intervals, 30k, 60k, 90k, and so on.
That aside, 2 similar coaches that have a difference of ~10k miles would not concern me to much.
In the end though, it's that darn supply and demand thing.  The best you can hope for is to find a hidden LD for sale.  That's your best bet for getting a good deal.  It's hard to bargain with some one if they are getting a dozen calls a day on their LD.  That's what I was able to stumble upon and it offered me the chance to bargain with the seller.  They had it listed for over 2 months, so I knew they were ready to sale.

There really is no definite answer to your question, but there are trends.  That's what you need to look at by tracking the sale of as many LD's as you can.  Look at the database of "used LD selling prices" to widen your knowledge base.

Good luck,

-Victor

For what it's worth, my experience has been to never deal with anyone who doesn't have a reasonable estimate of the value of what they are trying to sell.  Be it a motorhome or a house.  If they are overpriced, forget it and move on.  Why waste you time haggling to just get them to fair market value?  Do yourself a favor and move on.

Thanks Victor!

I have already printed out a few files from the database you mentioned (used prices). I feel like a kid learning to walk. I'm glad to have all this info to knock around before making a decision!

OK LD'ers, lets help Linda (and others) out.  If you bought a used LD and are willing to share the information, post your data to the 'Used LD Purchase Prices' database.  It is never too late to post the inforation to this database, even if you bought your LD several years ago.

Kelly Blue Book has relevance primarily because your bank's loan officer will use this information to decide how much money you can borrow to purchase the coach.

Here's what Kelly Blue Book considered "average" use for a 26ft Lazy Daze coach when I checked a few months ago:

year    miles   KBB value  asking price of 26ft units on market now 2002   12K   $56.5K    $60K,  $59K 2001   20   $50.5 2000   27   $46.0     $55K (diesel), $53K, $50K(sold) 1999   34   $43.0     $55K 1998   40   $40.0 1997   46   $37.0 1996   52   $33.5     $30K (100K miles) 1995   58   $34.9 1994   63   $30.5 1993   67   $28.0 1992   70   $26.0     $24K, $19K 1991   73   $23.0 1990   76   $20.5

Actual KBB value will be adjusted upwards $1,000 - $4,000 depending on the level of optional equipment (solar panels, leveling jacks, diesel engine, and so on) that an individual coach has.

If the coach has more miles than "average," its price should be adjusted down.  Fewer miles, adjust up.

Another angle on the mileage adjustment is how regularly the coach is put to use.  A coach might have low miles because it sat unused for years.  I look for a vehicle that gets regular use, and an owner that keeps receipts for maintenance and repair.

I used to be far more concerned about mileage than I am now.  We have an 88 model and have now put 84,000 miles on it.  During a "routine" front alignment, we had to replace one of the steering bearings, but

Good advice for a buyer. For a seller, books on negotiating say that a higher asking price statistally results
