Theft worries of LD...what is your opinion?
Yahoo Message Number: 20023
We would love to purchase a LD(possible new if can't get used).  We plan on traveling and backpacking across the country.  That would mean going to various parcs and leaving the LD for a week at a time.
I am nervous about leaving such a vehicule for such a duration unattended.  What are your opinions?  Am I worrying too much?  Thank you! Sylvie

The chance of break-in is much more likely than vehicle theft, and that more likely at remote trailhead parking or near day-use parking than in a campground. Professional thieves rarely travel to remote areas.
I really don't see an RV as an ideal vehicle for accessing trailheads for long backpacks - a car can get into the backcountry so much better. But, if you can leave it at a busy campground and find other transport to the trail, or if taking trips of a day or two into the wilderness from a semi-remote campsite, it makes more sense.

I agree with Steve! Finding a parking spot at trailheads with any motorhome can be difficult to impossible in the first place. It is often difficult even with a car!
Leaving one unattended in a remote area may result in it being broken into and things stolen or it being vandalized. It depends on how remote it is and how many and what type of people might actually visit the area. Chances are they won't be using keys to do it either and will break things to gain entry. Thieves rarely ever use keys or treat your belongings gently like you would if you lost your keys.
They will be using a pry bar, screw driver, breaker bar, rock or similar items to break in. It really doesn't matter what kind of locks you have either, compartment doors, windows, and other ways of gaining entry break just as easily with the best locks on them.
It would be better to leave the RV in a campground where the chances are far lower that someone will break in. Many will allow you to park it for a small fee (lower than normal camping fee) and it will be much safer. Then find some way of getting to the trailhead with the RV in a safer place.

I don't think you're worrying too much. I once sold my brother a VW camper that I had worked long and hard to customize and loved dearly.
His first trip was to go on a multi-day backpack with his daughter.
He parked at the trailhead and when he returned the VW was gone. It was found many months later hundreds of miles away smashed at the bottom of a ravine.

If gone for an extended period I would try to leave my LD somewhere safe and get a ride to the trailhead or tow a toad for that purpose.
Many RV parks have storage lots or space. This would also allow access to more remote and constricted trailheads where the LD could not go.
