I've enjoyed reading the latest posts about trip in WA and Ore.  I'm taking the month of Oct off and will be traveling from San Diego  to lower Utah - besides the National Parks, are there any recommenda tions for places to be sure to see?  We like to hike and I'll have 2 dogs.  No  toad.

It's hard to go wrong in southern Utah and northern Arizona, which could be the most beautiful place on earth. Almost anywhere between I- 70 and I-40 is sure to please. Be sure to drive Utah 12 from Panguitch to the campground at Capitol Reef NP. Take your time and enjoy this beautifully designed road amid spectacular scenery along the northern edge of the new Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Stay in the Capitol Reef campground. It's in a lovely orchard.
Depending on weather, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is preferable to the south, in my opinion, but can close early due to snow. Hubbell Trading Post, Canyon De Chelly and Monument Valley are other N.
Arizona must-sees. In S. Utah, Valley of the Gods, Utah 276 with its ferry ride across Lake Powell, the gravel road from the northern terminus of the ferry north through Capitol Reef is beautiful and not too rugged if you take your time (inquire locally), Moab is world mountain biking headquarters, surrounded by NPs, any road through the mountains that time of year should have spectacular fall foliage from turning Aspen leaves and, of course take in all the NPs, which preserve the best of the best.

Expect lots of European company. They love our colorful southwest.
But I don't think you'll find camping too competitive that time of year.
